Hi I am completely renovating my tank. Some fish on my stock list prefer soft water. Is it ok for them to be in hard water?

I have a ton of wood in my tank but they don't have anymore tannins. If I must have soft water I have tons of manzanita that is leaching tannins like a crazy train. Must I put them in?

depends what fish...

This might get flamed but i feel that ph and hardness or softness and temp and such doesnt have to be perfect but just has to be consistent.

Honestly those are all fairly soft water fish except the Kuhli and hill stream. So take them off the list. Buy a ph buffer and you'll be fine. I kept my Angels at a ph of 6.2-3 and they where fine. The other fish should be fine in a slightly soft tank.

peat bags... or peat in socks will help with the soften the water.

at the risk of getting flamed (as has been said) i have found that i can raise soft water fish in hard water.
mostly i believe because the fish have been bread for many many generations in the "local" area water. obviously keeping the tank stable is key to longevity imo

Yes I understand this. Hardy fish can live in a variety of conditions. But what about rams I have heard they are super delicate?
