I need some advice and experience to step in here...... I decided to build a tank without any mechanical filtration. Though I am still filtering until the plants grow. But this tank is a feeder tank. It has gambusia, guppies & mollies. I had the worst outbake of fin rot....so I originally thought. The fins on the gupps disappeares. 75% of the gupps were without fins and or dead in the a.m. These are/were fancy gupps. I am treating with a broad spectrum medication so I can halt this epidemic. So, I look this morning for the kill count. I saw a few gambusia chasing and nipping at a gupp. There's the history. So is it sickness or bullying. Has anyone kept gambusia and seen that they are bad little nippers? Was it just a coincidence that I saw a nipping?

I have a friend who owns a small aquarium store. I was looking at the gambusia to breed for feeders along with guppies, she advised me not to stating "they will kill everything in your tank". I decided to just go with the guppies, and judging from your situation I am glad I listened to her.

I have been changing water a couple of times a week. But I am still using bio, mech, and chem filtering until the plants grow. I did remove my carbon because of medicating.

Which is more prolific? Which makes the better feeder?

I have had better luck with platys than anything else. I don't fool with brood traps or anything, and the platy babies go straight to the gravel and stay there until they are too big to be eaten. I have a big tub that I keep adults and all in. I grind flake food and stir it into water and pour it in several times a day. I have a gazillion babies that just came out of the gravel, and will grow to nice plump snacks for my oscar and friends.

I have never gotten as many guppie babies as I do the platys. The females get huge with babies and although I can't be sure, it seems that drop a larger number than the guppies I have. The plats are a b*tch to catch though. lol
