Hi I have a 24,000 gal pool in my backyard and I really want to convert it into an aquarium. But my parents do not like fish nor care about the hobby. Any ideas on convincing them? Its built of solid concrete in ground with a 55,000 gal/hour sand filter with 350lbs of lava rock, 450lbs of sand, 100lbs of gravel.

Dude yeah right lol, there's no convincing them if their anything like my parents, do you know how much money that would cost to maintain? Not to mention its all been soaking in bleach and chemical ridden water since it was first filled, maybe 5k would get it where it needs to be, but goodluck on 20,000 gallon wc lol.

Why not convince them into digging a nice pond?

Dude oh my God dont even go there. Try your luck with a nice 2 to 3000 gallon koi or native pond.

You want to convince your parents to do this?

Go graduate and get a job where you make enough money to support even the utilities on this, let alone the cost of setting it up.

Then try asking them.

It's a bad idea. If you convert your pool to an aquarium/pond, just think about what type of fish you're going to put in and how you're going to keep them alive. You're probably going to want huge monster fish like arowanas and maybe some arapaima. How are you going to heat all that water through the winter? You're going to need like x 25 300watt heaters at least. I have a 240 gallon tank and the cost of heating that through the winter is bad enough.

Plus, some cool species like bichirs and other bottom dwelling fish you couldn't put in your pool because you'd never see them. You'd only be able to see and appreciate the top dwelling fish like aros. That makes your "aquarium" a lot less fun to look at.
