Hey guys, just wanted to say that I'm sick to death of not being able to get/buy the fish I'd like to keep!
I live in Australia,i love aus,but our fish laws are just bullxxxx!
U can't keep or order nothing cool,or too big,aggressive.
All I've wanted for YEARS,is 1or 2 payara,1 or 2 Goliath tiger fish,and a goonch!
After seeing the videos on YouTube, and having the net this time to help search,I was once again going to have a crack at seeing if I could obtain them!
FORGET IT!
Lucked out on all of them.
I sent heaps of emails, phone calls,a ton of driving visiting lfs and fish shops miles away, all except 1 told me Sorry, can't help!
It was like some of them didn't even want to try to help, even more so when I showed them photos!
I couldnt even get 1 person to pick up a bloody phone and make some calls,or searching the net for me!
A guy from Singapore got bak to me and said if I pay he will send, however he said, there's %99 chance they will get stopped by AUS customs!
I've came across, snakehead, arrowana, few different types of gars, stingrays, lomtoms,a few others, but NEVER any of the fish I want!
Atm I have a 375gal,the tank has 1 dovii,1 jag and a Oscar, just to keep everything cycling and going!
I was going use this as a home, but now I'm at a X roads, unsure of where to go from here!
I'm sooo bummed out about this!
U guys overseas are so lucky to be able to keep such great fish,I was watching vids of these fish on YouTube for hours!
Does anyone no of anywhere where I can obtain these fish?
?????????

That suck that Aussie has such strict laws on importing and exporting. But you can away get fly river turtle:)

There's a very good reason why Aus has such strict wildlife laws. It is an island after all so the habitat is very specialized. If something foreign got loose in the wild it could cause devastation for the local inhabitants. Isn't that what happened with the cane toads?

I know that's not what you want to hear but I guess you don't have much choice. At least you can get snake head. Good or bad it's something that's illegal in the US.

and i thought we had strict laws here in south florida : / the only problem over here are pirhanas, all aro's but the silver for some reason, a couple cichlids and some snakeheads from what i know of. you should look in to permits and stuff like that. i know here you can get a permit to keep asian arowanas for a good reason like education or research purposes things in that matter. you never know what you might find :)

I've always wanted a perentie monitor but I don't see that happening, ever, so it goes both ways. You can probably go out and find one just strolling around right? Lucky dog - N

I hear you mate. I live in Melbourne and the import laws get to me too. I'm a eartheater nut. Take satanoperca leucasticta. They are allowed to be bred, sold, kept here but we aren't allowed daemon or any of the other eartheaters... Why? It's top damn cold and they are pretty similar. Kills me. I spoke to the conservation department earlier this year and apparently we have a white list of allowed imports, a black list of not allowed and a gray list that is supposed to be fish yet to be rated and under consideration. They told me basically that gray list is being phased out and what we have now is it for imports. So it's not going to be better for us, just getting worse. I wish you luck on your quest, don't give up.

Yeah aus is a great country, just fish laws are brutal....
It's get very disheartening when u keep getting told no!
I think I mite over seas so I can keep the fish I want.
I'm pretty sure that there no permits available that will let me keep these beasts, when I asked if a permit was available, the guy chuckled and said not for the killers u want to keep!
Even more so with the goonch being protected and the decline in numbers...
I will keep searching,I'm going to look at a arro next week, and a gar,I'm going to ask this bloke if he can get some cool fish I want...

I feel your pain. I was looking to keep fish that are native to my area so that I wouldn't have to heat the tank in the winter time and essentially any fish that can survive our winters is illegal to take and/or keep. It was very frustrating.

But as others have said, it's for the greater good of your local eco-system. There are always going to be morons that buy fish they can't care for and end up releasing them into the local streams or lakes. These laws are a necessary evil...to protect against the lowest common denominator in our hobby.

+1
