Lights and aluminum foil

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone had ever wrapped a portion of their bulb in foil to block some of the light? I have a 48" regular shop light hanging over my tank and it seems like it is just too bright. I don't really see any problems with this as the lights do not get hot, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this and if there were any problems.

Yes or just take a bulb out, also blackwater works to dim lite. Fish like piranhas are lite sensitive and prefer dim conditions like the amazon.

only have one bulb in, I covered it with 3 pieces of foil so theres about 2 4" sections showing, and it is just what I needed. The room that the tank is in is fairly dark, so the dim light keeps my oscar happy and the tank no longer looks washed out.

Not really having much luck with plants, especially with my light.

With the cost of electricity these days you would be better off getting a smaller (lower watt) fixture!
