corner overflow box needed?

I just got a 230 gallon aquarium with two overflow boxes in the corner, I want as much swimming space possible, so are the boxes needed? i'm still gonna use the holes for the tank to the sump. just i wanna know if the boxes are needed

I think fish and other things would probably start flowing into the sump if you don't have them.
