Anyone put a common plecco with a FH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just make sure there is a good hiding spot and the pleco is pretty big.

by big, it needs to be the gigantic kind that takes bigger ****s than your fowerhorn does. I'd say the pleco should be double the size and remain so throughout if you want to try and keep them together. Hiding don't work, flowerhorns will move stuff just to get at it and at the same time damage themselves. It's not impossible, but I tend to stay away from them, they seem to dirty the tank as much as they clean it.

This coming tuesday I will be housing a baby FH with a 12" common pleco....after I give away my 5" red devil, 5" dempsey, and 8" Jag. He'll have the whole tank to himself....I can't wait!:headbang2

Thanks guys my flowerhorn is alone right now but I have two plecos that do really work with any of my tanks. Just trying to save em the long ride to the lfs.

I usually don't have problems with pleco size unless the tank has a single fh in it only... the fh views the pleco as an intruder unless they are introduced at the same time or the fh just gets bored and starts messing with the pleco. However plecos are tough and can take several days of this crap before they even get injured so its usually not a problem. this is the reason some people use plecos as a way to begin socialization of a fh that has been alone for a while.

all that being said, a young fh and a 12 in pleco should be fine

i do.. all the time.. they make great tank mates.. bichers too. fhs get along with these bottom dwellers..

It all depends on the Flowerhorn's temperament. It also depends if the pleco is trying to eat the Flowerhorn's food. If so then the pleco would be seen as a threat.

another fish in the same vicinity is typically considered a threat if kept in low numbers, regardless if food is the issue. People who normally keep FH's with other fish keep a lot of fish in the same tank that can hold their own to disperse aggression. Fh's tend to be timid when mixed with a lot of other aggressive fish that can kick their ass equally.

This happens from time to time, but don't count on it with FH's in general

I'd say just make sure the pleco is pretty big compared to the FH if you're going to try it. You never know you may be lucky and not have an aggressive flower horn :nilly:
