Does this male look mature?

Would you guys expect these rays that mature quicker to grow just as large as the late bloomers or do you think maturing size has anything to do with max size?

Do you know Alan thats a good question. I have two pair of Hystrix in a 9ft x 2.5 ft tank, both males are the same size, under 6" yet one has fully developed claspers which grew like hell over the past 6 months, the other male however still has juvenile claspers..very tiny! The females are about 20cm max.
So my answer to your question is ...yes I do think this is the case, I expect he will grow larger than this but I don't see him making a 25-30cm disc size.

i had a male hystrix that was wild caught, he was 5.5" when he died from getting chewed on, he was 3.5 years old or so and had mature claspers.
i didnt expect him to ever get larger than 10" or so if that!

I wonder how such a small male will be able to mate with a female? Does size matter?

Can't matter, I have fathered 3 kids lol !!

Seriously, as long as the male is in the region of a 6" disc he should get the job done, Hystrix have massive claspers in relation to disc size.

i dont think it is any different from a 10" ray breeding a 18" ray...

That's the exact size ratio in regards to my big girl's first litter. 10" dad 18" mom. First pup ever was from a 17" mom and 10" dad.

I think it's all in the male's drive......
