CREATING THE ULTIMATE FILTRATION AND EVOLVING WITH YOUR FISH!!!!!!

Yeah the nice thing about backflushing is that it acts like a water change too when you top off the water that went out the waste line.
That's what I have in mind for daily water change... Kinda like drip system, but not automatic. Just backwash daily, empty 20% tank water, then fill it up with new water.

The backwashing method you guys are using sounds great, iv seen the feature built into some filters , but can you modify a regular canister and make it backflushable. Would it be as simple as turning of the pump and pumping water back thru the input via an alt pump. I'm using 3 fx5 and a megaflow4 sump, my sump has a chamber prior to the pre filter pad, I wanted to access the PVC in the chamber and try to impliment filter socks. The chamber appears inaccesable any ideas on how to add in the socks. This is my first sump filter setup and I have a few alt plans to improve its capabilities and efficiency, but don't want to make usless mods.

Man you guys are making me more interested in the closed-loop systems! I love the idea of doing a simple backwash every day or other day to clean the filter and change bit of the water. My only problem is the cost of getting the necessary equipment shipped over to NZ.

Speaking of closed loops, I haven't heard much talk about Ultima filters, anyone got any thoughts/experiences to share on them?

I've got the day off today, I'm going to have a go at drawing up some "proper" plans for the sump, and maybe also for a big plywood tank..........
:screwy:

Ultima is one brand of bead filter. I have two 4000 model that I'm using, and one 2000 model that has been collecting dust, and will be put in service soon. I like them a lot. They're similar to pool sand filter, except the media is plastic beads, don't need to be replaced periodically like sand. It has multi-port valve, can be backwash, or flush by turning the valves to the port accordingly. The filter is combination of mechanical/biological. I've known a few people with big or messy fish (one with 8 super size AUL) who use Ultima, and it all work out for them

are you using yours for the sole mechanical filtration or running some sort of pre-filter? A lot of the set ups I've seen have run socks or similar before the ultima.

I'm still wondering if its worth the cost of getting one shipped over here, I guess I should email them and try find out where the nearest distributor to NZ is...

How about converting a standard sand pool filter to use plastic beads. If you read kendragon's earlier posts you'll see that's what he did. Might be easier to find a pool filter locally than having a bead filter shipped over there.

I must have missed that post! I was just wondering about that very same idea too, staring out the window at my parents old redundant pool with a big unused sand filter..

I'll go try find that post of Kendragons...

I don't have pre-filter. Just straight from tank thru filter and back to tank. I just backwash filter weekly. You may want to discuss with Kendragon on whether you can convert sand filter into bead filter. He knows more about them than me. I have a Hayward sand filter. It looks similar to Ultima on the outside, but I haven't open it and look at the inside.

And thats catching the particuate waste and giving you clear water? Awesome. Would certainly make things easier [for my design] if it was a simple closed loop rather than needing a sump and pre-filter and then the ultima. I've been looking into the cost with shipping from the US and if I still need to set up a sump and pre-filter its not really worth it, but if it could be the sole form of filtration then it may be viable...
