Wild caught fish from Ecuador?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To see if anyone had any more information other than what he knew...

That's it exactly. I've heard for a while now but no one has shown any proof of weather it is or isn't illegal. Some people on aquabid says it is in fact legal. Some sites on the internet says it isn't legal.

doomie ..... the vendor that you purchased your fish from doesn't even list those festae as being from Ecuador. On his website they are simply listed as:

RED TERROR SM ............. 4 for $39.00

On aquabid they are listed as:

RED TERROR FESTAE ( WILD CAUGHT )

Again, no mention of being festae from Ecuador.

I guess that old saying "there's a sucker born every day" still holds true.

In the past year it went from no one having any wild caught festae from Ecuador for sale, to every man & his dog having a seemingly never ending supply of them for sale, all of them being 1-2" fry, and for approx. $10 a piece. Right.

When things sound too good to be true, that's usually because they are.

You have a point with that one lol. That's why I questioned the fish I bought to be real Wc. To be honest as cool as it would be to have em I'm happy with regular festaes. Other then that I guess the truth will never be known. Most people might try to sell their "wc" festaes at around $15 . Johns was the cheapest I've seen at $9.75 a fish. Witch if you ask me wc or not either way that's not a bad price. Better then $15 a fish and $22 for shipping.

Well I guess the proof is in the pudding.

As long as they are healthy, quality specimens with no defects, and you're happy with them, in the end that's all that really matters.

The only downside to all of these recent "wild caught" festae is that it has devalued true wild caught festae, and possibly muddied up the overall genetics of this species as most people won't know what they actually have as with most of these fish there is no provenance back to wild, just some vendors stating that the guy they bought them from said they were wild. This seems to be a reoccurring theme with most cichlids that gain sudden popularity. Suddenly everything becomes F0.

That's so true. What makes it worse is its so hard to actually obtain wild caught festaes and many other fish in the hobby. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years festaes genetics are so worn down that they become like ebjds.

Wild caught fishes means nothing to me unless there is a "certificate of authenticity". Wait.... did I just say that out loud?

Lol right about that. That wouldn't be a bad way to track wild caught fish. Or have them fitted with a chip like some arowannas as proof.
