Thanks, I think I need to do a bit more research into them first before taking up any of your time. I'm planning on a 240x120x65 tank (unsure of glass or DIY yet), ~ 1800L or 450g, stocked with;
black aro
2 Royal panaques L190
2 blue phantom L128
4 sunshine L14
1 gold nugget L81
couple of other misc small plecs
and a couple of groups of cichlids, most likely 6-8 Geo altifrons, 4-6 uaru, and/or a group of angels, and perhaps a flagtail.

If I opted for the glass filter I'd want it to be the some filtration for the tank, I wouldn't really want to spend that much and still have to run a sump! My biggest concern would be how it would deal with the mechanical filtration as the panaques make a heap of rough "sawdust", they're only about 4-5" each now and its bad enough, so when they're pushing 12"+ I hate to think what it will be like!

Would a glass filter plumbed into a closed loop be up to working as the sole mechanical and biological filtration for a tank like this?

I think that pre-filtering is the most important part of any filter. If you don't do a good job of pre-filtering you'll have a lot more maintenance to do. And if you slack on that maintenance, that's when you'll have problems. That's all I'm saying.

If that is the extent of your stocking David I feel pretty confident in saying to you that a 16 inch Glass filter would be enough Bio and Mechanical that you would EVER need Now i am not saying that 5 years down the road you won't need to change your maintinance up a bit or have to backwash twice a week instead of once a week but you as an aquauriast will KNow what your fish need .I am also thinking you will put sand or gravel driftwood for the Plecos and so on am i right???Let me know what yours plans for the aquarium are and Yes the glass filter functions a whole lot better as a closed Loop system just about every way:)
 
Yes the tank will have a sand substrate, and a good quantity of driftwood, of course!! No plants tho, especially if I go with the uaru...

So lets say in 2-3 years I get bored of the peaceful SA theme and Henward finally convinces me to get another asian aro, how would the same filter handle large messy predators like aro, dats, big ornate bichirs, or a big community of CA cichlids, midas, festae, texas, oscars, jags etc? Although I'm planning fairly modest stock levels for now I would like to future-proof it if possible, I have been known to be indesisive at the best of times ! :P

Backwashing twice a week doesn't sound like much trouble, compared to cleaning filter socks every three days on my old set up. As long as we don't start running out of water over summer! And the simplicity of a closed loop system would be great. I need to get on the Wlim site and do some more reading and research, shame I'm off to work now, damn night shifts!!

It wouldn't be a problem. I currently have an Ultima 4000 that I plumbed multiple tanks in the total of 850gal with 10 arowana from 12-24in, at least a dozen p-bass 12-18in, about 50 bichirs 10-20in, a 16in blue eye Pleco, an 8in watermelon Pleco, two 18-20in Aimara, a 20in gold clown knife, dozen datnoid 8-12in, and about 3 dozen of other fish. Water change twice a week, backwash one a week. Hulon's glass filter is same size of my filter, but loaded with better media, so it would be a piece of cake to handle your future stock...

Yes for sure like i say tho more load more backwash simple as that i never let my psi get over 5 pounds if it does then time to backwash the guage is easy to see mounted in the 7 way just a glance and it tells ya were your at !!!

Wow Awqsome !!!!!I can tell ya guys chambers are a little different beast then sumps but when you get used to the routine it's just nice no other way to put it:)

Hulon are you running it with or without the blower? Where does the "glass filter" name come from, are those biowave sinking media made from glass or something?

hey sorry David Ya Wlim makes use of that same chamber Body and depending on bio load it might be recomended to use a Blower ...No i do not use a Blower on my system ,,The glass media is a fairly new product That makes use of recycled crushed glass ..Crushed to specific sizes right now they have fine and coarse i make use of the coarse media i would suggest the coarse media to you also....Like i say contact me and i will steer you in the right direction ;)
