Is my stand strong enough?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have tank on a carpet and it works fine for me. Maybe you could put plywood on the bottem of the stand to, the side that will be against the carpet and it would make just all one even pressure spot instead of pressure spots of just where the wood is.

It'll be difficult to pre determine how your stand will settle in the carpet. It'll also be difficult to get a good level on both your aquarium and stand esp when you start filling aquarium with water. You could fill aquarium, check if it's level, use shims where needed, check regularly and adjust as needed till your aquarium stays level.

In the past I'll set the tank up with out water for a day or two and just the weight of the tank is enough to settle, I'll shim where needed but I've never had to adjust after filling the tank. If I put it somewhere without carpet it will be in my kitchen or dining room lol. I don't see the wife going for that.

Hello; Tanks on carpet can work fine, it is the almost certain water damage that I was talking about. A member in another post some time back responded that they did not plan to have any leaks when I cautioned about putting a tank on carpet. I had not planed to have the serious leaks and spills that have happened over the years. I do now plan to set things up to hopefully avoid the extra, often very serious, problems that go along with a lot of water on a floor over time. A leaking tank is enough of an issue on it's own. In the end we all get to run our tanks any way we want.

I've only owned one tank over my years of doing this hobby that wasn't on carpet and I've never had an issue. I am trying to convince my wife to let me put it in the dining room though. I don't own this house and don't know if it will permanently crush the carpet/padding and leave an imprint. I don't want to replace the carpet when I move out.

Ok so I started measuring for the plywood and I realized the center of my stand is a little high. With the tank on it there is about a 1 to 2/16'' gap between the tank and stand on the ends. Will Putting a sheet of 1/2'' foam down before the tank be enough for this to be safe?

Hello; I did carpet work many years ago as well as having some experience with my own tanks. I have not been lucky enough to get away with a tank on carpet without some sort of problem and damage. The water will splash, leak, spill during water changes, filters leak and so on. Once it soaks into the carpet and gets under the pad underneath the tank stand it will stay wet/damp for a long time. It may not dry out at all as more spills and such will likely happen.
Can you get lucky and not have any issues? Perhaps. There will be a good chance the carpet under and around the tank will be damaged in some way. Perhaps crushed. I had damage to the floor as well as the carpet. If it is wall to wall carpet I know of no way to just replace a small area.
I own my own house and will not take the risk.

Well I've been talking with the wife and I may have her convince we need to put it in the dining room.

Hello; I have not used foam myself for such a purpose. There has been some discussion of foam use on other threads that a search my find.

On a large tank such as yours my thinking is that you cannot be too true. Such a high spot in the center of the tank would be of concern to me.

Perhaps a sheet of plywood on top of the stand that has been shimmed at the ends? A sheet of foam on top of that? Cut a bit from the bottom of the center support legs and hope the weight will take out the hump (this seems farfetched as I write it)?

Sounds like you may have placed the 2x4 with the crown up. I have been trying to think of some fairly simple way to grind/sand down the high spot. It could be done but even with the right tools would be a time intense task.

Let us hope some one with more experience about wood stands can help.
