I recently purchased one through a local cichlid vendor and it was a lot smaller than I expected. He brought the ornate in and I picked it up. It's about 2 inches and is eating hikari sinking carnivore pellets. I originally planned to have it with my bigger bichirs but my lap and endli could eat the ornate. :irked: It's in a ten gallon and the temp is around 86. What are the growth rates on them? Thanks in advance.

they can grow pretty fast until they reach 12". then it slows down. feed them tilapia and smelt. it will grow really fast because the tilapia is for the girth while the smelt is for the length. but it wouldve been better if it was in a bigger tank so the growth rate would be faster.

The 10 was originally for quarantining but its too small to go with the others so the 10 has to be its home for the time being. My only other option is to throw the little guy in my brother in law's 56 gallon tropheus tank lol. Thanks for the info.

The ones I've had grew pretty fast. Like an 1" a month. I fed them MP, talapia fillet and pellets. Wish I never sold em:/

That's awesome. I may have to go and pick up some tilapia and MP. I'm not sure if this is relevant but my little delhezi I bought has doubled in size from carnivore pellets. It has literally been only two weeks. I hope my ornate is the same :D

I think the 56 is a better bet... but just make sure he get his fair deal of food... Keep the food varied.... they really show on their growth....

They will :)

The tropheus are around 1.5-2" and eat alot. There are also synodontis petricolas in the tank which I worry the ornate may make a meal out of. I'll see what I can do.

They will :)

That's awesome! Thanks.
