My Red Devil killed my smaller Tiger Oscar :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is that so? I've seen them living together in numerous tanks. How is that noob? The Red Devil was in a tank with a variety of other cichlids (including a Tiger Oscar) and the guy at the lfs store even recommended that I take him when I was going to pick a Jack Dempsey or Tiger Oscar. You can keep your useless comments to yourself.

And thank you to everyone else that had a useful input. :screwy:

The fact you listened to the LFS shows you are a noob. Also stocking your tank with incompatible fish without researching before. And taking a look at your signature even proves you are a noob by stocking fish like mollies and gouramis with cichlids. I also hope those African cichlids are not in the same tank with the American cichlids.

They put a lot of cichlids together at the LFS, but they cram them all in a 20 gallon. Just cause you see at the moment they are not killing eachother, doesn't mean it doesn't happen when people are not watching. My guess is the guy wanted to dump it on you cause the fish was a pain in the butt. The first thing you gotta learn is NEVER listen to the LFS AND do your research BEFORE you buy fish. I hear tons of people always say " I am gonna upgrade later". But most are not dedicated to even do that. They keep fish for a little while, get bored then give up. Or everything always dies cause they never learn how to stock tanks properly or care for fish right . IMO if you have plans to upgrade later, why not start with the big tank from the get-go? People are just too selfish and stubborn and want large fish despite their tank size. You have to learn to not get fish if you are not equipped to care for them at adult size. RDs and Oscars get to a foot or over easy, and can live at least 10-15 years, sometimes longer. Are you prepared for this commitment?

Do you have African cichlids in with South American cichlids? Also, were the mollies and gouramis meant to be expensive feeders? That is the only reason you would put those fish together.
Your red devil is never going to stop killing other fish. It's what they do. They aren't called red diplomats or red members of green peace. They kill stuff. For fun. Upgrading later isn't going to work, either. You need to upgrade now. You fish tried politely asking for more space during the hundred days he didn't kill other stuff. Then, he asked a little louder by killing your Oscar. He will start shouting soon by killing everything in your tank.

Sorry to say but that lfs guy dumped that Red Devil on you. Should have take the Jack Dempsey. An Albino Oscar could have been mauled by your current Oscars. I've had that problem in the past. Adding and Oscar with other Oscars when significant time has gone by. Well at least in a 55 gallon it would be a problem. It was a noob move on your part but you'll know better next time.

I was thinking the same thing. And don't take the term 'noob' too negatively. I've been keeping cichlids (New World and Old World) for about 5ish years now and I still consider myself a newbie as I have A LOT to learn.
