CREATING THE ULTIMATE FILTRATION AND EVOLVING WITH YOUR FISH!!!!!!

Hey hulon I do have a question can you show me where to install the pressure gauge and where to get the gauge from for my filter thanks? Any specific type of gauge that you would recomend?

So its the 'Bio Wave' filters I should be looking at?

Hulon are you running it with or without the blower? Where does the "glass filter" name come from, are those biowave sinking media made from glass or something?

website gave me more questions than answers... :nilly:

Filters on the website are for koi ponds. They can be used for tanks but adjustments may be required like flow rates through the filter and UV. The Bio-Wave is mainly a biological filter so additional mechanical maybe needed for tank use. The Bio-Glass filter is not on the website because they do not want to mix it into their koi pond products. They are working on a new website for fish tanks.

Thanks Ken, and Hulon, makes a bit more sense now! I'm still in the early stages of planning the project, haven't even decided if it will be glass or DIY yet! Need to get in contact with the tank maker and get a price first, then decide what I'll do for filtration.

Using crushed glass for media sounds interesting, I'll keep researching! This thread has been great, lets keep the discussion going!

That's good that you are researching to find your need. It's always evolving like Hugh said. Do not rule out sumps, socks or reactors, it will be specific to your need.

A little history in my 240g......It started as a armatus tank with a sump and bare bottom. It was stocked with 10 armatus and 10 red parrots. Things went south when the armatus hit 12". I could not keep up with the WC. The sump made it very hard to change big percentage of water.

I decide to change to cichlas thinking it was easier because I won't have to feed frozen. I had 7 brokopondos. Again I battled high nitrates. I end up ruining them because they all developed HITH.

I wasn't going to let it happen a third time so I changed things up when I made this my xingu tank. I added substrate for added biological. Hooked up a glass filter for mechanical along with the sump. The glass filter made WC very easy at any percentage. Fish does not panic because the pump is alway running. Slowly I did away with the socks.......then the sump. Water quality maintained good with the glass filter alone. This tells me how I over did my biological and neglected my mechanical. As I mentioned before the ammonia and nitrite should be easy but water clarity and nitrate is the challenge. If you dump your mechanical regularly I believe less gets converted to nitrate. My 10 xingus and 10 red parrots are bigger now and water quality is still in check. I'm sure backwashing will go to twice weekly soon.

This is how I did it but I'm sure everyone has their own way. Good to share.

Good explanation, and thats a really good point. Having effective mechinacal is one thing, but if its hanging on to the waste for a week or two then thats going to put a whole lot more load on the bio. The backwashing is so simple and easy enough to do frequently to remove the waste from the system. Seems like a really good system, just have to convince the wife its worth the moneY!!

Really depends on what you're keeping and total water volume.

Good luck with that! I hope she likes fish keeping. Otherwise, there's no difference between spending $1.00 or $1,000.00 on fish/fish item...
