GIRAFFE NOSE CATFISH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not really, plus it depends on the species in question, as there are several but most get very large. Generally the most commonly imported variety- auchenoglanis occidentalis, can grow to 36" and it wouldn't be very happy in a tank as wide as it's own length, even if kept alone. They also produce a lot of waste and a large one, say a 20 pound+ fish, would require massive filtration...

If filtration is sufficient then yes. I've yet to see anyone with a 36" giraffe nose let alone a 30". 36" in the wild but it will grow to about 30" max. I say yes.

fish grow smaller in captivity than in the wild especially the ones that grow to more than 3 feet.

I'd say no. I can tell you from experience they grow quick and get too large for a 3' wide tank. Mine was close to 2.5' after 2 years and was still growing rapidly. Great fish though, probably my favorite cat Ive ever owned.

I can't tell you what to do but I'll put it this way, If a giraffe catfish was unfortunate enough to be imported into the pet trade, an 8 by 3(425 gallon) would be one of the best homes it could possibly hope for. People will tell you it needs more but lets be realistic here. It actually has a shot at a good life in that, unlike 99% of the other big catfish that are imported these days.

I have a small one now and He is awesome by the way. He is in a 180 now but He is only 5 inches and will be mpving him to a 8'x 4'x2'(580 gallon) in the next six months. I would hope this size tank would be big enough and I'm sure others would disagree but like stated above it depends on what kind you got and He would be better off in your tank rather than somepne who has no business getting one at all. Good luck

I have an 8'x3'x3' tank with 3 mono peacock bass 1 arowana and 2 oscars can i house a giraffe nose catfish for life.

My answer is no. Not even with a 4' width. Relatively speaking, it is a great tank versus what's common out there, you are right. But one would be well advised to not only think in such relative terms, IMHO, they must include absolute terms in their thinking too.

He should be ok in an 8'x4' even at 2'.
