I think i should add a cichlid...but what to add?

I think I'd go with a vieja that pops. Like a synspillum. Or maybe a beauty like my avatar... a lyonsi!

your avatar looks nice. here is info from a profile i found on lyonsi:

Quick Facts :: Lyon's Cichlid
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Maximum Size: 12"
Minimum Tank Size: 12 Gallons

12 gallons for a 12 inch fish? awesome!

so far, i think a jag might be too big. I would want the gourami to remain the dominant fish in the tank and i have a bad feeling the jag might take over and bully the gourami too much. something that can get up to 12 - 16 inches that isnt overly agressive would be more ideal.

The good thing about a jack dempsey is i typically see larger ones at the lfs that have been returned by people who could not longer house them or just wanted to change things up so i am sure a jd would be cheaper and a larger specimen would be easier to come by.

i like the loiselle, lyonsi and synspilum. I can't say i have ever seen these fish at the lfs before, but i have never looked for them either. How much do these fish usually go for?

I may be getting away from cichlids here but does anyone think this would work with my setup: banded leporinus?

nah mate jag all the way. they give as much as they get and most of the time people jump to conclusions about there aggression saying that they terrorise tankmates to death. It all depends on the individual fish, and realisticly a synspilum has just as much potential to be a terror, so pick the one you like

There are really any number of possibilities that would work well in that situation, which is pretty close to ideal. Just stay away from any of the true brutes that want to claim the entire space as their own like dovii or umbriferum. A male Jag, festae, haitiensis, Midas/red devil are marginal considering the individual fish. I would look into the vieja/paratheraps group. Also a lot of the astatheros are beautiful and unusual like robertsoni. A JD would work but are awfully common. Also, you may consider some of the large SA cichlids like cichla, chocolates, true parrots, large pikes etc..

i really dont like oscars. i think because everyone seems to love them :) i dont mind a common fish, but something unique would be better. oscars just dont do it for me...

What about the standard dithers? Silver dollars or something similarly fish-attention-grabbing and fast enough to be nigh-invulnerable.

a school of something might be cool. they would have to be big enough not to get eaten by my endlies and fast/robust enough not to take damage from my gourami and green terror....i dont like the look of silver dollars. maybe bala sharks?
