I've never had an issue with an aquarium heater. If you don't run enough watts then yea it will be working ot and wear out quicker Idk.

Consider yourself lucky then, almost everyone that has been in this hobby any amount of time will eventually have a heater fail.
As far as Jager, at one time they were by far the best heater on the market, some lasting 10-15 yrs, and longer ........ then Eheim bought them out and the quality control went to crap. I know a LFS owner that stopped carrying Jager a few yrs back because of the constant complaints he was getting from heaters failing. Another LFS owner stopped carrying heaters altogether as he simply got tired of dealing with all of the returned heaters (of various brands) that had failed.
Then we have the Stealth heaters from Marineland, that not only failed, but in some cases exploded, blowing out the sides of tanks.
I agree with Jose, the vast majority of aquarium heaters are simply not reliable, as all of them are very cheaply made with cheap parts from China.
My jehmco 500w titanium heater with the ranco controller. $115. Kinda pricy for a heater but well worth it IMO

try getting a hold of the old version heaters. i find they work better then the newer ones. for example, the eheim jagers. the old ones are awesome had a few for 6+ years with no issues. bought the newer version with the blue top and they are crappy.
