Blue acara tankmates in 90 gallon tank & breeding advice wanted!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not really upset over it. It was a neon. A $1 fish. I wish it didn't have to be fish food, but nature happens. The others will be saved tomorrow afternoon. I think I am going to scratch the firemouth idea and go with one of the more, peaceful cichlid set ups I can.

1 blue acara
2 geophagus tapajos
3-4 Bolivian rams
6 angelicus loaches
1 Siamese algae eater
10 Dennison barbs

The geos and the acara get to be about 6 inches, but are usually peacefully for cichlids. The Bolivians may breed, but they are small and I doubt they will cause any problems. If so, I will let them have the 20 gallon to themselves.

I personally would go with a firemouth instead of the bolivian rams, still think they are just too small for the acara. Lets just hope yours is peaceful. But other wise the stock is pretty good i think may need lots of filtration with all those fish. PS what is the plan for filtration?

I have a Penguin 350 HOB and a Cascade 700 canister ready for the tank, but as soon as I can find a cheap 30 gallon tank, I will try my hand at fashioning a sump for it. That way I can have more wiggle room for the bioload (even though I am definitely not going to overstock the tank) and avoid all the equipment showing everywhere on the display. I intent to use bio-balls and live plants with a sock filter to remove larger particles.

True. After witnessing the neon being eaten, the acara might try for a ram when he is full grown. LOL

Ryan,

What is the likelihood that the geos will form a breeding pair if I get 4? And while I know all cichlids are aggressive when breeding, what are the geos like when breeding compared to something as aggressive as severums or less aggressive like rams?

My breeding Geos are not as aggressive as breeding severums. They will chase but not much else. They would probably be more aggressive toward their own kind than their other tankmates. The larger, more aggressive Geos may be bad, but I don't think it'd be a problem with orange heads. Besides, my geos won't settle down and breed in a community tank if there's too much activity, so you may not have to worry about that at all. It really depends on how comfortable they feel with their surroundings.

Also, geos are mouthbrooders, so they're not as aggressive when carrying their fry around as severums are when they're trying to defend a free-swimming ball of fry. That's not to say that Geos can't be nasty; I'm sure there are exceptions. A lot of people here have kept orange heads as community fish and rarely do you see posts about them terrorizing a tank.

Awesome. I was reading up on the tapajos and saw several sites recommend them in groups of 5-8, so I think 4 of them would do well. I find that most websites recommend more of a fish than you really need, but people on forums will usually tell it to you straight. Some of them over recommend the number for "optimal" conditions or in case one dies on you, but if that happens, I can always buy another. I think between the firemouth, acara, 4 geos, 6 small loaches and an algae eater....my tank stock list is pretty full. The sump filter I will build will at least make it so that I don't have to worry about the bio-load and only worry about territory disputes. The tank will be heavily planted and have lots of hiding spots though.

Well I am only rescuing 2 neons. The acara has killed off all the other tetras. He killed 3 tetras in one night. I witnessed him eat a neon. I can't figure out if he is aggressive or just being predatory. He/she completely ignores the loaches, so I am thinking predatory. I am going to pick up a firemouth of the same size. I figure that if the acara starts going after the firemouth when he is only 2" long, he is going to be an aggressive fish.

So I went to the LFS to drop off the two remaining neons and check out the firemouth. Someone bought almost the entire stock! There were only 2 left with one being twice the acara's size and the other being almost three times its size. Plus, when I put my finger on the glass, they bolted to the back. So I looked at all of their stock like I always do and came to the severums. I saw a really pretty, young 2" green severum in with 2 other greens of the same size, a gold with a missing eye of the same size and another green that was three times the size of the others and harassing all of them. The two small greens and the gold bolted when I put my finger to the glass, but the pretty green and the big green came up to me. I smiled without realizing it and said "screw the stock list, I'm getting you!" LOL

My girlfriend also picked up a hillstream butterfly loach that is about 1.5". It will be staying in the 20 gallon when I move everyone over to the 90 gallon because it maxes out at 3".

So I am thinking I will forgo the firemouth and replace him with the severum. I know it's a lot more fish than the firemouth, but I think my tank can handle it. What do you think? Can I keep the entire stock list with the severum instead of the firemouth and still have enough room?
