What Synodontis am I ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting - thank you for the schooling! I know he has that "dip" you're talking about - thanks! Any idea what the likely second parent might be?

LOL about the gravel - it's actually dark blue - it must be the lighting.

Not much of an idea. Various guesses abound such as euptera, ocellifer, multipunctata, etc. The goal of those who make them appears to be to produce as close decora look-alikes as possible, so go figure...

Moreover, there are plenty of hybrids starting to appear of second and third generation that have one or both HYBRID parents!

Decorus are 95% black at 3/4" and develop the gray which becomes very light as they mature. If this fish is 1 1/2" to 3" it is a pure Decorus. Nice fish!

The local Petsmarts around this area are calling this one Synodontis longirostris, but I am willing to bet it's one of the hybrids.

i had a decorus years ago... i dont remember him looking like this fish, but agree hes likely a decorus hybrid.

Wow. Really? It does not look like one, not to mention that S. longirostris is extremely rare (without any exaggeration) and hence quite expensive. Syno buffs around the world hunt for this fish for years and years on end without success. It is also one syno that grows huge reaching 2 feet.

That why I'm guessing hey're tagging that name onto a hybrid. These cats are too small to be wild caught and look to much like everyone elses "jaguar" synodontis.

I have a syno that looked exactly like this when young. Mine looked like a multi X decorus. Truly beautiful fish now though! Get him in a high pH! Atleast 8.3!

Why? Keeping in mind that the multipunctata parent is a guess and multis are indeed from the Lake with a high pH and hard water, decorus is a riverine syno. Their hybrids usually thrive in any water of 6-8 pH, IME... but I am eager to learn more facts :)
