How to make fish school?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys! Well I don't understand the way the pet store that I bought my tank off has about 10 congo tetras in the same model tank as me and they always school. I guess that's because of the blood parrots in there.

The easiest answer is that you do not have schooling fish. Most of the phantom tetras will only school very loosely, if at all.

I like this, anyone else want to back this up? If this is the case then I guess I'll change to some other tetra. Would large cardinals be too small for the angels? What other schooling tetras could I house?

A medium-large ornate bichir significantly improves schooling behavior.
It does cost you $2-5 in replacement fish nightly though.

Schooling is for fighting only. Once the threat is over, tetras and barbs just sit and lounge.

What about the congos down in the LFS? Judging from what people have said here I'm sure there are a fair share of schooling tetras. Even the neon tetras I used to have schooled and there was no threat at all...

I have congo tetras sitting in front of me in a peaceful tank right now.
They're just scattered here and there, exploring, chewing on plants and dirt, contemplating their non-violent existence.

I would theorize neon tetra brains are so small, they can't tell whether they're in a fight or not lol.

large predators don't usually school....

I have never seen any fish just permenantly school in a tank, having them swim around on their own just means you are doing everything right and they are comfortable and healthy.
People say danios but im looking at a bunch now and none are schooling, same with neon tetras and tiger barbs
