I recently got a Senegal Bichir that's about 4 inches long..
After about a week, I bought another bichir, about the same size, but the original started chasing it so I had to return the new one.

Is this normal? If it makes a difference, it is a 55 gallon tank..

Do I need to set up more territories? Or can I just not have more than 1 bichir?

thats kind of normal since bichirs sometimes do get aggressive to other bichirs. but if you have more, then the aggression will lessen :)

So getting a few more will lessen the aggression? Are you sure about this?

What about territories? I've got a few pieces of driftwood sitting in a bucket soaking right now and I'll add those soon, will that make a difference?

i have 14+ bichirs in 1 tank so im pretty sure about it. i have not experience any aggression whatsoever from any of my bichirs. not even my ornate. also, for me atm i dont have any driftwood or anything. just plain sand.

You only have a 55 gallon so I wouldn't really consider getting more than two.
That tank is really only fit for one, but if you want two, the driftwood should help.
Try putting in some small feeders like guppies or minnows to attract attention.
And it's always better to have a bigger fish to put in second because the first one has already established territory and is familiar with the new home. It will be more dominant since it is already comfortable as well.

i have 4 with no aggression issues at all

55 gallon, 4 feet long tank is pretty good for senegals.
I'd pack 6 senegals in there.
Haven't seen a bichir fight a bichir yet.

I think you just happen to come across an uncommon bully fish.

I have 7 bichirs in a 60 gallon. They only sniff and pile on each other. No fighting. There are no territories but lots of plants, and heaters to sleep under.

I wouldn't care if a 4" bichir is chasing a 4" bichir. It's a tiny baby. What's it going to do? Cry at the other baby?
I don't think it's possible for them to kill each other. Probably just need 1-2 weeks to get acquainted.

A 4" bichir isn't sexually mature yet. At least 7-8". I don't think it has any concept of "territory".
