Has anyone bred Mini marbles?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would hardly call a 12inch disk mini

no such thing as mini or dwarf rays some just get bigger than others depending on food water and tank space

p14 are only meant to get to 18inch disk but my female is 4inches bigger than that easy maybe more but i dont call her a giant or mega p14 shes just a big girl

i think mini is not a good term to use as it makes people think they can keep them in small tanks

I agree

Thanks for the reply Ed.
how long have you had him and do you know how old he is?

He is wild caught i have had him for about a year he has not grown at all while my females have grown quite a bit when i got him his claspers were already fully developed he came from a 1000 gallon tank into my 650 so he has plenty of room to grow but has not ..Age i would say about three years old give or take .....

i am talking about marbles that have rolled claspers at 7" ..like my male was..
and a female that has been pregnant at 7 to 8"..like my female was.

you can get a human girl preg at age 10 its against the law but does that make her a mini human just because she can have a baby so young

buy breeding a so called mini male with a mini female and they had pups would you sell them as mini marbles or just marble

by breeding 2 small rays is no garantee the pups will be small just like the micro pig scam they dont ALL stay small

very good point i would say just Marble for now but i do have to say these smaller ones do seem to have quite a diffferent pattern on the outer disc that said ones that have that particular pattern seem to stay small can it be predicted with any sort of acuracy not quite sure....

If responsible breeders keep selecting specimens that mature at a small size and stay under the 12 inch mark for years while still responsibly kept and fed then perhaps we would eventually get lines of mini rays. It has been done with burmese and reticulated pythons, why not rays. They took naturally small wild caught adult populations and bred them to produce strains of mini monsters.

it would take 5 generation min to garantee that ALL will stay mini

even then you may get a gene throw back like with micro pigs even they dont have a stable gene pool yet but they are still sold as micro which is wrong in my eyes

Umm..what?
kind of a bizarre comparison.

look. people have marbled motoro's that are wild caught coming in at 7" fully rolled.
the female i have was pregnant at 7"
myself..i have never seen a motoro of any kind that was pregnant at 7"..

How bout taking a different view on this? How would you explain this if it was happening in your tanks?

Say someone falls in love with marbles. Gets a big tank, sets up ponds, and more tanks. Fills the ponds and tanks with nice Marbles and notices some grow much faster then others. They point this out to other hobbysists, and get ridiculed for "stunting" thier rays, improperly housing them in too small of tanks, not feeding enough, and running inadequate filtration. You know the typical raykeeper "insults".

This thread is no different then asking people if they believe in god. Some say yes, some say no. The people that claimed to have seen or have proof believe, others stay open minded, and others point fingers at the "crazies"

Anyone that wants to come take a tour of my basement and discuss this subject with me is more then welcome. Only after seeing what I have in person would I be willing to discuss.

As far as contributing to a thread that seems to take the standpoint that mini Marbles are a jackalope, tooth fairy, santa, unicorn, or bigfoot....... Good luck. Conclusion appears to have been drawn. Hope it's the one everyone wants.

The cool thing about raising imaginary rays is the fact that you'll have room for so many more then if you were to just keep "real" rays.......

this is my whole point i have 2 female p14 both born at the same time from the same litter yet one is 6-8inch big than the other so is one giant p14 or the other a mini p14

having multi rays in the same tank i would say that of course some will grow bigger than others

people have different ideas on this but i think all animals grow at different rates but with a group of rays of the same type you spot the difference in growth more than you would if you just had one
