Replacing trim and repairing tank help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why spend more money then needed? Just buy a new trim and build a canopy. Save some cash that way your not buying wood a screws every few years.

Use redwood. Cedar decking boards last just as long as pressure treated without the chemicals. It's more expensive but your only buying a few boards, and an extra 5 bills never killed anyone. Plus it looks better. Add some epoxy coated deck screws, and you'll never be replacing it. Plus you get to show off something you built yourself, which is better than a stupid plastic rim any day.

1st off the only way trim would crack like that is of the tank already blew out, my guess is the tank blew out in his place, then he tried to reseal it and fix it and it prlly didn't even hold water so he sold it..? Hopefully for your sake not, but how else would that happen?

Yes you can brace your own tank out of wood, many canopys are sealed with a clear coat. If I were you id do it nice and use molding for houses, find a nice pattern you like, paint it black with krylon fusion, and frame around the top, then seal it with silicone then attatch your cross bracing. Pretty simple pretty cheap!

Be sure when resealing to scrap 100% of the old silicone off, silicone doesn't stick to silicone very well.

Can't you reseal a blowout? I intend to strip the entire thing down and remove every last piece of silicone before resealing the entire thing.

I will definitely use clear coat. The girlfriend will have me use the moulding. LOL

Agreed. That is why I want to build the new trim rather than buying new plastic.

If the glass is solid and not chipped or cracked its 100% fine. Make sure every speck of that glass is clean!

Wouldn't new trim cost like $50-75? I can build wood trim for $15 if I don't go fancy and use moulding. And even with moulding, the cost would be about $30-40.

You forgot paint and clear coat screws. So it wouldn't be much of a difference in price. I paid $29 for the trims on my 55. It depends were you buy it from some places charge by the foot.
