How big does a snapping turtle have to be to do damage?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was bit my mine, and she is roughly 10 inches long, hurt like hell and caused a definite gash, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be

looking at the pics, your snapper isn't anywhere near four inches, remember the size is done in SCL, shell length only, not with its head and tail.

It wouldn't by a long-shot. They are about the size of a silver dollar when they hatch and the yolk sac should be absorbed within weeks. They typically will not eat until the yolk is gone.

As to the O.P.'s question on damage, they aren't really dangerous at all until they pass six inches. A ten inch Common Snapper still wouldn't take a finger off, but it could definitely hurt you.

Exactly. Now the one footers and aboe, that is another kind of ball?..

I work in Times Square. I think I'll go "rescue" a tourist's wallet. Don't worry, I've got enough space in my pocket and I've got plans to upgrade my bank account in the future.

Its been a few weeks since u grabbed this turtle from off the surface of wherever and u said his yolk sac was still attached then... How long is this yolk sack gonna stick around for cause o would think ited be bout gone

I'm assumed that this snapper hasn't had an actual meal yet...probably being so badly burnt from ammonia in 2-3gal tank.
