Anyone into oddball plants?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actually am a rare plant collector / grower / seller - haven't gone through all the pages yet, but there were some photos from a Botanical Garden - I'm always up for a good trade, or purchasing some that are not normally available in "google circles" so to speak.

Once I get a bigger place I will start a bigger collection. There is a lot of interesting cacti and succulents. I also am fond of Carnivorous plants. There is a few aquatic carnivorous plants too. I also like really oddball stuff also, look up carrion plant/carrion flowers and Indian pipe plant.

Well I was on amazon about to click the buy button for a bonsai sago palm and I looked it up beforehand and found this Wikipedia page on toxicity here

Toxicity

"Cycad sago palm is extremely poisonous to animals (including humans) if ingested. Pets are at particular risk, since they seem to find the plant very palatable.[2]*Clinical symptoms of ingestion will develop within 12 hours, and may includevomiting,*diarrhea, weakness, seizures, and liver failure or*hepatotoxicity*characterized by icterus, cirrhosis, and ascites. The pet may appear bruised, have nose bleeds (epistaxis), melena (blood in the stool), hematochezia (bloody straining), and hemarthrosis (blood in the joints).[3]*The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center estimates a fatality rate of 50 to 75% when ingestion of the sago palm is involved. The incidence of ingestion by pets has risen by over 200% in the last five years.[4]*If any quantity of the plant is ingested, a poison control center or doctor should be contacted immediately. Effects of ingestion can include permanent internal damage and death."

Yes, because we all know just how ACCURATE WIKIPEDIA is :nilly:

Seriously, as a word of advice, if your going to quote references / sources, at least get them from a reliable place and not some site where 90% of the info is incorrect...

A few years ago we were diving Los Arcos, some rocks south of Puerto Vallarta. After the dive our boat guy (son of a friend) asked if we wanted to try an unusual fruit. I took over the boat (first time I had driven a 150HP outboard with a tiller) and he proceeded to scale the rock to pick a fruit off a cactus-looking plant. It tasted a bit like a Kiwi but much more flavorful.

Wild Dragonfruit:

That fruit looks delicious, looks like an amazing experience

It was definitely the best "oddball plant" experience I've had, and it was really tasty.

I'm into cactus plants but they are kinda common. But I really enjoy them

How? I was just correcting somebody with incorrect information. I was the 1 that bumped it because I subscribed to this thread. Because it is a good 1. Might have gone just a pinch off topic.

Oh and gotta stop jinxing threads. Saying I killed a thread is only your opinion and the vet guys too. Lets not turn that into a fact. That doesn't help anyone.
Looks like you just killed a whole page of this great thread :)
