This is a brackish set up. The water quality is great - salinity is 21 (1.016), PH is 7.8 - 8.0, amonia is nill. The spots look like indentations or holes. They are not fuzzy at all and seemed to appear over night. Any ideas?????

Better pic would help.

Most people don't keep dats in brackish except for ATs. I think most are supposed to have some tolerance for it but I'm frankly not 100% sure which species are more tolerant than others. That looks like an IT though, and everybody I know of pretty much keeps those in fresh.

That being said, those could be bite marks. Any potential tankmates it is beefing with?

I dont know the difference between an AT and IT but will check it out. This guy is just shy of 10 inches. The only tank mate that could stand up to him would be a large blue malawi crab. Other tms include:
2 red scats (2")
2 green scats (3")
2 silver scats (8")
1 rogue FM
2 Mono Sebae (5")
2 Columbian Catfish Sharks (9")
I think the crab is a possibility. The dat likes to hide in the caves the crab digs out. The shell of the crab is about 4" across.

The dat was sold to me as an ST. It was just over an inch when I got it. It is pretty reclusive, preferring the shadows of the driftwood which makes pictures tough. I'll sit at my desk with my back to the tank and I can see him swimming around in the reflection on my monitor but as soon as I turn around, he dashes into the shadows!

Could also be that he swam into a piece of driftwood or rock if he got scared. Normally happens when you turn the tank lights on.

Not sure if a crab could catch a dat. They're fast!

This guy was sold to me as a ST. I got him when he was just over an inch and he seems to be thriving in the brackish water. I tried to set up initially with tms that would be found naturally together - the FM was a fry from a pair that are now in another tank. She is a piece to try to catch and I think if I moved her into the tank with the breeding pair, the male might kill her. The crab was an addition that I just couldn't pass up. Thanks for the feedback. I'll see if I can get better pics.
