Gar+Stingray.. My observations.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know about your gars but almost all mine will eat foods off the bottom of the tank without any issues.

As far as rays and gars. I have had 2 rays with gars. The first one, a male motoro kept getting it's disc nipped by the cubans gars. The second again a motoro and again with the cubans was not bothered by the gars at all. In both instances they were short term tankmates.

Well she said the aggression comes from feeding when the garland rays are competing for food off the bottom. If you we're to switch the gars onto floating pellets then it would eliminate the competitiveness between rays and gar. Rays would stay on the bottom for feeding and gars would stay at the top for feeding.

I don't think you got what I was saying, even if she tried feeding different foods to the ray and gars, some of the gars would likely just eat off the bottom instead of going for the floating pellets. Introducing a new food source wouldn't necessarily eliminate competition at feeding time.

Good point Kevin, and Thank you for shareing.. the floridas in particullar eat from the bottom, I think its because the cuban is a pig and eats most the pellets that are floating. The other thing i will note.. is I feed the gar the pellets before the rays worms are added to to tank so the gar aren't so eager to get their share, and are at least not "hungry"... Alan hate to dissapoint ;) but my rays only eat live atm from what ive witnessed, as the eel only eats nightcrawlers as well. and the Gar have had pellets as part of their diet for years now.. I just add 100 goldfish to the tank every week, once they finish off the goldfish they get pellets until the next weeks batch of live. The bites only happened when they where being fed the pellets. The Tanks ussual feed schedule

Fri- 100 feeders ( they will last until sunday if I'm lucky but usually only until saturday)
Mon-Thurs Pellets

I use to fast them until Tuesday or Wednesday after the last feeder diassapeared but this schedule was how the one ray got ripped up.

My main concern atm is the gar putting on extra weight being that they are a few years old, But the plan is to still seperate everyone long-term I think. O at least have things set-up so if i need to seperate immediatly we can. buying a house is a pita.. and takes way more time then everyone thinks!

120wide... It seems small to me! and yes the bio-load is impressive.. I was hoping to cut back to weekly water changes but have been too afraid of my water quality to do so, until the filtration matures another few monthes... I use a 40Breeder as a sump. The overflows go to a 300mil sock.. then a hundred or so pot scrubbies, and I tossed a few old bio-wheels that where just sitting around as well as some ceramic media from their old 75 which helped cycle the tank to begin with.

to give you an idea how big everyone is the ray in the back right has a 8" disk and is with her tail 18" long.. the eel hideing is 24" and touches nose to tail front to back in the tank, so thats only 1/3 of her.

&*^*& fish won't stop growing! lol and fast... the oldest fish in there is less then 3yrs old atm.

Is it a 4x2x2 footprint?

yep 4x2. the extra depth has made a huge difference from the 75.. but the overflows have made an even bigger difference.
