Gar+Stingray.. My observations.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep a spotted gar with a pair of motoros and a few other fish and have no issues. My gar only stays at the top of the tank except for at night. When I wake up I see him sitting on the sand and the rays don't show any interest in him. The smallest hint of light and the gar rises to the top. Feeding time is no problem. The gar only eats in the top left side of the tank. I use a 3 foot piece of PVC piping to feed the rays to make sure they each get a good amount. The rest of the fish are hand fed or fed pellets. No major issues with feeding or compatibility.

120wide... It seems small to me! and yes the bio-load is impressive.. I was hoping to cut back to weekly water changes but have been too afraid of my water quality to do so, until the filtration matures another few monthes... I use a 40Breeder as a sump. The overflows go to a 300mil sock.. then a hundred or so pot scrubbies, and I tossed a few old bio-wheels that where just sitting around as well as some ceramic media from their old 75 which helped cycle the tank to begin with.

to give you an idea how big everyone is the ray in the back right has a 8" disk and is with her tail 18" long.. the eel hideing is 24" and touches nose to tail front to back in the tank, so thats only 1/3 of her.

&*^*& fish won't stop growing! lol and fast... the oldest fish in there is less then 3yrs old atm.

Pothos will help reduce wc drastically, click my Sig!

ive played around with trying this. Im assumeing your just useing the 1" diam or so stuff ide use to plumb my tank with?

Yeah Alan i love Pothos too! i forgot to mention those and the free floating plants in the tank ( tbh cant remember what they are but they are in all my tanks and combined with the pothos my nitrates never get over 20ppm. If you look at the bottom right you can barely see the pothos in the pic. they are still newer cuttings so aren't running 100% yet, reminds me i need to drop some off. Weve had pothos in our house since i was a kid... so i have a few plants i trim up for my mom anytime shell let me and start bare rooting them into my tanks.

Nice!

My fish are messy and 2 75gallon wc every week gets old, not just the work but the $$ too, and dechlor etc. I love how pothos just suck up n03.

I'm using the 3/4" but 1" would work fine. It started when i realized my 12 year old tinfoil barb was having a hard time finding pellets when i just threw them in the tank. I went to the hardware store and bought a 3 foot section of piping and bought a rock with a flat top that's about 6" tall. I would put a few pellets on there using the PVC and over time I "trained" him to eat off the rock. Now he circles the rock during feeding time and eats well. Then I started using it to feed the rays. This way I can ensure each ray is getting enough food. They recognize the PVC and come straight to it during feedings. If I just threw silversides and night crawlers in the tank, my 2' knifefish would eat everything before the rays got a chance.

I like the reference to gars being like dopey dogs... I've had gars with bichirs before, and ran into the same problems. The gars unfortunately had to go. They are like unguided missels with teeth that can do some serious damage.

Currently I have 1 cuban gar (~30+ cm) and 1 tropical gar (~50 cm) with 1 motoro (~25 cm), 1 pearl (~15 cm) and one itaituba (~14 cm) and it's working fine. When I added the pearl it's tail got bitten by the tropical gar so it's a bit shorter than normal but nothing more than that.

Before I've had the same motoro with an alligator gar (~50 cm) and that worked pretty good to. The ray got bitten in the disc but nothing to worry about.

As someone said before, it's funny to see the gars resting on top of the rays.

My observation to this combo in my tank was observing half the dead stingray on one side of the tank and the other half on the other side of the tank

i remeber that.. you and i think Xander both had some really bad experiences with this combo.. one of the reasons i wanted to pos about it to see what was out there. Really made me hesitate to try the combo to begin with... and I lost sleep over this.
