Hello; All real leather is an animal skin. Animals that are used for food have the skins put to a useful purpose rather than being discarded. I will purchase leather products made from such animals. I generally do not buy leather made from wild or non food animals.

The cruelty for such animals occurs while they are alive. I will not go into the various practicies involved to get them to the point of slaughter. The leather products made from such animals happens much later after it no longer makes a difference to the animal.

I love my leather jackets, i believe they are lamb skin. They do use the rest of the lamb which is why i am not opposed to leather if the whole animal is used in some way, dog food for example. I am however against skinning animals and just throwing the body in the trash. There is a right and wrong way to do most things

I agree with the both of you. I don't have an issue with companies making leather as long as the entire animal was used.

By the way, stingrays are a popular food in some cultures, so I doubt that the meat gets wasted; the rays are most likely farmed in Asia and are probably utilized to their fullest extent to prevent unnecessary wastage.

Lastly, be sure to keep this thread civil & respectful.

I knee that leather comes from animals. There is a generic type of man made leather. I'm not sure what its actually called but I call it pleather. Its different when an animal slaughtered for food is skinned . That's actually a good thing that they find other things to do with the left over remains. I wouldn't be surprised if all these animals that are hunted for their skin become endangered or extinct. We've all seen it with the tigers. Rattle snakes are fallowing close behind. If the trend continues stingrays will be also especially our freshwater rays alot of these have unique patterns.

If your leather comes from India, then there is a very good likelihood that it did not come from meat. There's a pretty big industry that scams families and communities out of their elderly pet cattle, promising them a nice retirement before loading them up into box trucks. The animals are not fed or watered on their way to be slaughtered, and frequently choke when they fall down while being tied to the interior of the truck. Not quite the 'make use of everything' end that we'd like to imagine out of our domestic meat packing industry. These cattle are very desireable because their lighter colored hide takes dye and bleaching much more easily than other colors -- and India has more lax rules about the dangers that the dyes pose to the workers!

I would not recommend buying leather unless it was produced in your own country.

Here's a few links that emphasize the tratment of animals as well as the impact on the workers and environment.
