what kind of fish is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could be a stressed Kenyi. The Males are bright yellow whereas females and juvies are blue. Do a quick google search of Maylandia lombardoi.

I'm not sure why I did that but I typed demasoni and meant johanni...I've seen them called "electric blue johanni" before and they are a pretty common african in the trade. Anyways, I've had several and ime they are only extremely mean with fish that look like them. I've kept mine until maturity with other different looking africans with no issues but as soon as I added another johanni all hell broke loose. They started facing off while the bag was still floating. Long story short, it could be fine but I wouldn't add any fish that look like it if you decide to keep it. Your kenyi should be different enough but avoid adding any demasoni or auratus.

thanks bassfisher, that's what I was hoping to hear. Its the only one like it of its species, and seems to get along just fine with the others, other then the occasional chasing of my moss barbs. I will keep an eye out to see how it is as it grows up. @Rafini, when it was stressed, it turned to a dark grey body with blue horizontal stripes, going back to black once calmed down. After looking at the different possible names, the only one that is remotely close is the young male melanochromis johanni.

some african reef cichlid. Not a fan.

Ya, but to each their own right? Hell, most of the fish I like most ppl think are ugly, but I still like them.

:jaw:
I had a 4 inch male melanochromis johanni that was too aggressive for my other african chiclids so I took him to the LFS where the guy put him in a tank with a 6" green terror and a group of africans-haplochromis something, purple with yellow fins- despite my warnings. when I left, my chiclid and the GT were sparring.
I came in the next day and the guy told me he got in big trouble because of my fish. it killed the green terror and took many chunks and shredded many fins of the other fish. I looked at his tank and he was sitting in the middle pleased as could be, while the halps were crammed into the top corners of the tank.

ouch really? did he start of that way, or become more aggressive as he got older? jw cause this guy seems to get along fine with everyone, but i don't want to wake up one day with half my tank slaughtered

Yes that's a Electric Blue Jahanni. Very aggressive. I have one in my spare tank right now that just about killed the 2nd in charge Male Kenyi. I am looking for someone to take mine. Here is the outcome of the Kenyi.
