what kind of fish is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea, it's a johanni or maingano.. or in that family. I'm not exactly an expert on identification, but I have kept both.

What size tank do you have? That makes a huge difference.

Anyhow, I have kept these a lot.. Males very aggressive to each other.
IMO, it's kind of a toss up on whether they are aggressive to other fish (individual fish can vary in aggression). I have one in my 300 gal now that was given to me because it was too aggressive from the previous owner.
There's enough room for other fish to get out of it's way, but I think it has been doing some nipping.

I guess I am most concerned because you said you had "Moss barbs" in there too.. I assume those are green tiger barbs? Those really aren't suitable tankmates for Africans.. I would be concerned about the health of the barbs longterm in a tank with Africans. The other africans may or may not be ok with your new addition, hard to say.

bit of an update....so far there has been no issues at all, he actually swims along side all the other fish, with no aggression at all. The only aggression he ever show is when the moss (green tiger) barbs get into one small area of the tank. He just chases them out and then goes about his business. its a 125 gal tank that is about 6' long....with plenty of little hiding spots at the back, and an open swimming area in the front. I haven't seen any physical signs of stress in any of the fish, and other then the barbs getting into what seems to be this ones "territory" no real aggression either

Not a maingano or electric blue johanni. It looks like an actual male johanni.

it's a johanni. i've owned one and he did fine with my peacocks and haps. the only issue i ever had with him was with a pleco. he grabbed it by the "neck" area and would start shaking him around like a dog would lol. needless to say he's gone
