The 540 gal build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I can't wait to see this finished! I'm curious how your going to support the upper pieces of glass. It doesn't look like you have any kind of support. I was planing on "euro bracing" the top.

Also are you drilling into the plywood for the filter?

Are you planing some kind of cover for the tank to keep jumpers in and help with evaporation?

I just love this build! Thanks again for posting and answering my questions!

Bracing wasn't shown in this video. I added bracing in a few days later. I went with 12mm(1/2") euro bracing. In the corners they overlap, so i have 1" bracing in each corner.

Yup, i and drilling into the plywood to plumb it(already have actually, the tank is now complete. Including all plumbing and filter)

For a cover, i will not be covering it at first. I will only have around 18-20" of water in the tank when it is running, as well as the 3" brace acting as the lip. So jumping will be difficult for the rays. Discus dont tend to jump, which is most likely the tank mates.

As for evap and humidity, im going to heat the room slightly below the tank temp. This will help a lot. But i also have a dehumidifier hard plumbed in that room, and an air exchanger. So i should be ok.

Ultimately, i will probably end up building a lid, but not in this series. It is already finished.

Seen many of your DIY clips on youtube brother. It was you and a few others that expired me to build my 400 gallon that I just finished a few week back. Here's the link to my build out thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?498957-366-Gallon-DIY-plywood-aquarium-%E2%80%93-3D-AutoCAD-Design-turned-reality

I have since moved on to building a 600 gallon tank in a similar fashion to the one seen in my link above but will be including built in foam insulation to retain heat this time around. Good luck with your build brother ;)

So....... how did you do the plywood bottom? You can't use one sheet with a 6X6 square. You had to use two sheets and brace the seam somehow?

I like the euro bracing idea, but damn, 1" thick! I was going to go 1/4 and over lap in the corners to get 1/2" thick. Now I think I might buy another used 125 gallon tank for euro bracing LOL I love this build BTW :)

Nice job on the tank! Glad i could help inspire you to build.

Thank you.

Awesome as always, Joey. I would love to do this, but I definitely need to move first!

I said that only 5 months ago.... bought a house, and started planning out a new build. Came up with this one.

For the bottom, i did exactly what you just said. But more added to it. You'll see in the video, i dont want to spoil it. BUT, from what you have said thus far in this thread, i think its pretty safe to say that what ever you think i did, i probably did do. Sounds like you have been thinking about it for as long as i have!

It was actually cheaper for me to order in the braces new, then to buy another used tank and have it cut. The braces cost me $100. And that on the high end of cost.

Right on! Getting to the meat of this build! I like the stand idea, I was struggling with this thinking about a metal welded tubular steel stand but how would I move it in or out if I move! So there's no room for a sump, you must be going for a canister, a very large canister like an Ultima? I can't wait to see that hooked up!

Awesome joey, Im excited for the next video already cant wait, same thing I was thinking egon some sort of canister filtration.
