I would want to know if you can keep a filter alive with putting airstones in it? I have a bed filter that i may have to take out of action for a week or two, but i dont want to lose the bacteriafunction til i take it to use again. Would airstones be sufficient to keep the bacteria alive?

That might do it. Keep the water circulating with the pump.
The organic material contained in the filter will feed it for a week.
The bacteria will live as long as there is food water and oxygen. When the food is gone so will be the bacteria. I have heard of people starting new tanks cycling before they add fish by adding ammonia to the water. Maybe adding a bit of ammonia to the water will give the bacteria the food they need to survive.
As some one else said if you add ammonia that will keep the bacteria alive seeing how that's what they feed on anyways just coming from a different source. Also adding ammonia to an uncycled tank is how you do a fishless cycle.
