So I decided to change my stock a bit last week. I love predatory fish, that eat a lot. So I got 8 red belly piranhas and put them in my planted 60 gallon. They are about an inch and half now. They have grown half and inch since I got them a week ago. Now, I also have a 8 inch silver arowana in this 60 gal growout. I got him before I knew I was getting my RPBs. When I was feeding my RPBs this morning, and everyone was eating merrily in their little school, my arowana swopped down and ate two of my RPBs! I immediately caught him and moved him to my main 1300 litre tank, its 6 ft by 3 ft aquarium with my red belly pacu, oscar and pollini + various other cichlids and smaller fish. Question now is, when my RPBS grow to about 4 inches? Will the school be safe with my arowana in my main tank? Should I get more RPB now for a bigger school? or is 6 fine you think.. Please pros and cons.

LOL it should be the complete opposite. 6 RBP with a arowana. Dayum that aro gots some guts. But as long as the Arowana doesnt lose its dominance, I think it should be ok. but dont listen to my words. My words are only theories. Ask VETF1. I am pretty sure he owns RBPs and can answer that for you

If the piranhas are larger say 4-5 inches that arowanas tail is gonna look like Swiss cheese . I would urge you to keep the red bellies in a tank by themselves the older these fish get the meaner.

Add a couple payara.

never consider any tankmate in with rbp as any more than food... i can see him getting harassed without them intending to eat him but their naturally unpredictable and should be treated as so!!

Nothing is safe with a shoal, not even your ARM. If you appreciate your aro and want to see it grow up, I highly suggest keeping it out of the rbp tank! Rbp are serious fin nippers and when young cannibalism is even a problem.

Very few cohab rbp tanks are successful, some have luck with plecos, crayfish, various cichlids etc.

I think a red belly Piranha tank should always be species only, but then again they do enjoy the occasional hunt and meal, whatever fish you value do not put them in the same tank.

Your going to see their growth explode in the coming months, they will hit 4" in 40-60 days from now then by a year they will be 5-7"! It's hard enough to focus and maintain them, I can only imagine a big aro in for the ride as well..!

ROFL....piranha are a staple of payara diet in the wild.
