dovii: Yes, I have noticed that as well...a lot of the pics of the adults I've seen are pretty messed up. I suppose it would be better to go with something that is more guaranteed to look nice as an adult.

fishman: stunning! They look fantastic, love the male. I will definitely consider this...do you breed them fairly regularly? How long do you usually have fry for before they're all sold?

Acubillos: very nice motas. I can tell that the male has amazing color, I see some blue in there, which looks amazing.

Thanks very much for all of the information everyone. I think it's down to male freddy vs male mota right now. Will have to do some thinking! Either way should be a nice fish and tank setup.

Last few questions...

- are these guys going to kill any bottom feeders I try with them like catfish or plecos? Will dither help the pleco's chance of survival?

- What is the growth like on them? If I buy 1"-2" fish, how long until it reaches ~6-7" and I have to move it out of the 40 gal breeder/55 gal grow out tank?

Thanks again

Joe

I have a nice Jag female, she would probably be alright in a 75/90, but if you happened to get a male you would be out of luck. I have always loved the Freddies but never kept one. I would like to in the future, not enough tank space right now.

My male jag usually ignores the large Pleco he's in with but he will give the Pleco and occasional nip to move him out of his way. My jag went from 1 inch to like 9- 10 within a year.

A pleco should do fine with either. Just get one thats larger than your fish. Also provide him a hide away where he can escape if needed when your cichlid is larger.

If you get your cichlid at 1-2" then by the 12 month mark he should be close to 7". I always recommend to ugrade to the final/biggest tank ASAP reguardless of your fishes current size. Your fish will grow faster and have better water quality with less effort on your part that way.

Good to know they grow quickly!

Perfect, thanks for all the helpful replies everyone, truly appreciated! Will post some pics when I finally get around to doing this :)

Any sites you can recommend that have good species profiles? I saw the sticky in this forum, good stuff, but wondering if anyone knew any other places to read up?
