I've been looking to buy online. Probably Zimmermans. It seems they won't be longer than an inch from him.

What do you feed em when they are that small? Will they eat tropical flakes?

When they are bigger it's not much of a problem feedin them.

Zimmermans is good, so is Jonahs Aquarium and Sachs aquaculture.

for a 55 I wouldn't go any bigger than the dollar sunfish. maybe about 8 in a well decorated tank.
as for feeding them, my baby sunnies get a wide variety. NLS thera a pellets, ocean & seas pellets, hikari pellets, freeze dried crickets, daphnia, blackworms, frozen bloodworms, frozen squid, frozen brine shrimp. basically the same as my adults.
just crumble the pellets to sizes that will fit their mouths.
the NLS crumble to powder with a small pair of smooth jawed pliers, very good for tiny little fish.

Good idea on the pliers.....You could keep 2-3 of central type Longears, Spotteds or Shadow Bass in a 55g if you just wanted a species only tank; but if you wanted a good community aquarium I agree with Gill Blue, Dollars, Northern Longear, O-spots and Bantams would be your best bet.

I got 20 sunfish from Zimmerman's Oct 3rd Dollar, & both of this Longears. They are in a 72 gal Lite planted bowfront now till May and will keep about 10 after that. I was very scared about feeding them too. I just started keeping fish this summer. The biggest ones were about 3/4"-1" Smallest ones were about 1/2". I started by feeding them freeze dried bloodworms from Ken's fish. Now they are eating 1mm green pellets & 1.5mm Krill pellets still doing the bloodworms in am. Mine have grown to about 1 1/2" for biggest to about 3/4" smallest. The small ones are missouri longear, he just started selling this years batch when i got them.

Wow man I got my Dollars August 27th at .25 and .50 inch and the biggest is 2.5 inch and smallest about 2 inch. They have been growing fast and got tons of color now. I only feed them once a day and occasionally skip a day. But it must be the live food I feed them that has been making them grow fast.
