I'm a fan of this, who doesn't want some random chickens running around, it'd kind of be like living on Kauai; plus if you got hungry you could train like Rocky and chase one down.
Back on topic...
I will have to agree with what has already been said: I think a lot of times the "casual fish keeper" ends up buying a tank and stock purely for someone else in their house hold. I was one of these people not too many years ago, my wife, girlfriend at the time wanted a tank and the 10 gallon we bought spawned into what she now calls my obsession.
As far as buying a tank and fish purely for decoration, well thats along the same lines as buying a painting just because it matches your couch.
My tank is decorative but maintained
I love telling people at chain pet stores the kind of fish I keep. Some know but the vast majority know nothing. They consider oscars difficult lol

Agreed. When I ask for a specific fish in a tank of many fish the people look at me crooked. Most people just point and say "ooooh give me one of the shiny blue ones!"
And yeah, the industry is driven by people buying fish for their 9 year old kids.
Haha this literally made me lol cause I thought about when I was in petco a while back I was getting some feeders for a stubborn hoplias curupira that I bought from a friend and I wanted to get him fat before I started starving him to train him off live well I'm standing at the feeder tank trying to figure out what size debating on if certain feeders were to bigger for him so the girl standing there goes what are you feeding oscars like she new everything all cocky and like she knew all fish and everything about them I said no and didn't tell her what I was feeding and told her I'd take a dozen medium size feeders so as she's netting the fish she reluctantly turns and go so what are you feeding? are you feeding cichlids? Jack Dempsey green terrors stuff like that ? I look at her with a "are you serious" look on my face..i said no Hoplias curupira and she instantly look down finish netting the fish and didn't say another word lmao I love when stuff like that happens haha it is the funniest thing the look on her face when I said that and the redness she got on her face plus how fast she looked down I almost burst out laughing in the store I couldn't hold back the smiles and chuckles though lol got love unknowledgeable people that think they know it all lol

Yup. They look so confused when I tell them the stock on my tanks like they are amazed that those are fish names, they think my jag is an exotic fish lol

I wonder what crosses people over from fish keepers to hobbyists.
I think it's the point when you think of fish while away from (i.e. not in front of) your tank.
