9" Texas Cichlid Tankmate Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like the update pics....gives a better view of your fish...very nice and in mint condition..i may not be the best to give advice on this one because i have a lone male midas in a 150 .The tank is in our family room and the hovers tank center most of the time and follows particularly myself as i move in or out of the room...he is around 13 inches and i can not see another fish (cichlid) being in with him...i think your own idea of perhaps silver dollars or maybe some bottom dwelling fish might work...you have a fish without a mark on him... .

You need to add same size or bigger fish. I know it may be hard to find but it is only way. Remove your texas from the tank and re arrange decor if you have any. Add new fish than your texas again. Should help with aggression. Good luck.

Your Midas is awesome! I too have my tank in my family room and he loves to watch me (and beg for more food) as I go about my day. After reading all these posts I'm thinking I may have to keep him as a lone male as well. I may consider a bottom dweller if I can find one big and cheap enough. I only have one store around here that sell big fish at a decent price. Side question: have you ever feed your big boy frozen Silversides? My guy wont go near them. Also, do you use feeders at all? I feed mine crickets (frozen) which he loves, but would like to start on some live food. I apologize if I'm supposed to post this in a different forum on this site. I'm new to all of this. Thanks!

I would say its probly texas crossed with veja synspilum more than likely

Whatever he/she is its a beast. I think it looks like a vieja synspilum with the spangles of a JD, doesnt really have any texas traits. But if your still interested in finding a cichlid tankmate why not try a middevil off the opposite gender? I dont know how your area is but in Chicago theres quite a few people just giving them away.

Thanks for your comments on my midas... I do not and have never given him feeders... He is about 8 years old . Maybe okay for certain types of catfish or other carnivorous/piscivorous fish .... But no no for cichlids other than maybe peacock bass .... I was going to ask you did you or have you use feeder fish.. That's going to make your fish more aggressive to anything you put in your tank ...also you run the risk of transmitted disease into your tank... Unless you breed and or quarantine your own... I don't use the frozen silversides either... i tried them on my managuense and he did not touch....
I do use live crickets from time to time... My midas eats pellets frozen bloodworms.... My other fish also eat uncooked frozen shrimp cut to size... I would say do not give yours fish live or frozen... He is more of a omnivore herbivores type...

No I have never given him live food. I'll just stick to the crickets and his krill. Thanks again for the advice.

So I just googled the vieja and a Texas and I feel pretty dumb thinking this guy was a full texas all these years. I just took the LFS word that he was when I bought him. I'm looking at a couple of vieja's on youtube and comparing it to my guy and it's very close. Same color and markings and his body seems taller and thicker than a texas. Well I guess he has more than a couple of inches to go! Hopefully his nachul hump will get bigger over time. :)

Very common for lfs to sell hybrids as a pure bred fish. Don't feel bad or dumb that's why ur on this forum is to learn.
