WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST TANK?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had guppies in gallon pickle jars with cabomba from a pond that I would change every few weeks. First aquarium was Christmas, 1969. A stainless steel framed, slate bottom 10 gallon Metaframe brand. Saved my 1 dollar a week allowance and got the stainless steel hood. Paid about $4 for that. Bought different color incandescent light bulbs and changed them all the time. The first fish that I remember getting for it were zebra danios because they were the cheapest fish they sold at K mart at 3 for a buck. Got an undergravel filter for it. Talked my Mom into advancing me 3 weeks allowance ($3) for that, it was state of the art to me! There is a lady here in our fish club that runs around 20 Metaframes for her discus hatchery.

My first tank from what seems like forever ago:

It was 1 Comet and 2 Shubunkins in a very underfiltered 29 gallon tank.
Now my Goldfish have a 246 gallon, much better filtered home!
You live & learn!

Yes exactly! And were still learning :)

A 55 gallon i loaded with RB pacus. I was only 15 at the time and had no idea what i was getting into. Luckily i found responsible owners later on for these fish.

Haha, Atleast you rehomed them!

Are those dear antlers? Or some crazy dw lol?

55g 4 rbp. Under gravel filter. My mom's work was going to throw it out, and at the time rbp's were $5 a piece.

5$? Wow.

The first tank that got me back into the hobby for the first time since I was a kid was a x-mas present for my stepson. It was a 29g kit that we let an 8yr old decorate and pick out the stock. It had blue and white gravel with the multicolored glass beads, the neon multi-colored rock decorations, odd colored fake plants, and the fish was a mix of the petsmart 5 for $5 sales and was completely overstocked with mollies, guppies, tetras, rasboras, etc. It was a horrible combo and I didn't understand the cycle back then and cleaned it weekly by taking everything out and scrubbing it down in hot water. I can't believe anything was able to survive in there.

Same here, that 40gal in my pic was never cycled, I didn't even have bio media, only the tiny bio wheel, but for 1 lsn, 1 rocket gar, 2 iridecent cats, 2 sd and random danios no way that sufficed!

Holy smokes man, that is some serious history which I respect! You've been in the hobby a long time, you probably have forgot more then I know about fk. Cheers.

I started my fish keeping when I was 6 with my father's old 200G cement fish tank! I kept pretty much everything that I can catch in the pond and rice field near my house. I had snake head, wild bettas, catfish and gouramies, ...

DIdnt have a tank as my first tank... My first tank was a pond I dug outside to about 50 or so gallon filled it up with water and threw some blue gills in it...Would wake up to find the water gone...fish dried up...repeated the process for a few years until I was introduce to bettas....I was around 9-10 y/o

My first was when I was 6 and won a fish at a fair and stuck it in a 1 gallon tank.it died 3 days later then my older brother bought me 6 guppies and got me a 10 gallon tank all because that goldfish I won died anyway I fed them and I think it was about month not sure there were baby guppies In the tank.but only a few survived then I gave some to my friend because I was moving and the rest to a pet store.and couple years later got myself a 55 gal then sold it and got a 110gal.will never the goldfish that started it all :^D

First aquarium was a wash basin in china...failed at gold fish...but was able to raise tadpoles to froglets(and cried when they all jumped away)...managed to keep a crawfish for a long time as well...

Next was a 10 gallon in high school, goldfish and pleco.

Next first year out of college 100 gallon and the 135 gallon. Had that for over 10 years, then got rid of 135 gallon when married...run 100 for 7 more years, then sold the 100 and got the current 300 a year ago.

just looking thru some old photos and cannot believe how far I have come in this hobby! So let's see em, if you don't have pics, stock and setup please!

..... but this was my first real tank. 40 gallon with some SERIOUS compatibility issues, if I saw a fish at my lfs that I liked I bought it, I mean I had a HUGE 40gal ;)
..........
Hey F1, love that funky old underwater "cabin".

my first tank was 10G, I was 12 or 13.
mostly livebearers and ich from being told that wc's would SHOCK them. went thru fish like crazy. a few cories , neons, african dwarf frogs.
when I stopped killing everything got a couple small fw archers. they were FUN.

Got a 40 long after I was 18, & did regular wc's. had little community where everyone got along fine & stayed healthy, can't recall everything.
......dwarf gourami, 1 black red tail shark, cories and an awesome young BGK. maybe some swordtails. Live plants.
Sold the whole thing to one guy @hard times. The ghost was my pride & joy.
