Breeding and feeding earth worms to fish.... do or dont??

Well my Big Town News is: NO red wigglers for sale ANYwhere now.
hubby came home after hitting every store that carries them. he found out the man who raises & sells them (there's one local grower) well, his adult son died- it's an old man who grows them. No one's seen around him since the death.
He's probably holed up alone at home, grieving.

now I feel so selfish.
How I reacted--> "Oh no, where will we get red wigglers now? I'm completely out."
been wondering why we haven't seen any in stores. thought maybe he was on vacation.
Isn't that awful?

so, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being a totally heartless callous person with no compassionate concern for my fellow man at all. where does that put me?

and my second thought was "Oh that poor old guy. If I knew him, I could help him tend his worms........... so he doesn't go out of business."

if my O doesn't like crawlers, I doubt that dried ones will seem better. he must like red wiggler meat.
Gonna have to start growing my own?

It's been raining here in Socal and this AM I found like 100 of them on my front porch. Wife thought I was nuts but i grabbed a bunch and fed them to the tanks and they all went nuts. I think fresh is always better, treat or otherwise.

I kept red wrigglers for several years to hand feed a tire track eel. In 6 months went from 50 to well over a thousand. As has been mentioned, avoid citrus. Also potato peels will start to grow rather than be consumed.

To keep your culture from becoming too acidic, you may want to grind up dried egg shells and sprinkle them in.

Happy worm keeping!

There are several people on Ebay who sell red wrigglers.
Thanks. Now it does look like I'll have to order from out of this area to start growing a bin :-/
