Please help my O "Swamp Thing"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what I see, the eyes do look puffed out more than they should be. The bloating looks like the only other symptom, are the scales normal? If everything else is normal...

It could be internal parasites as already mentioned

Another possibility is a diet problem. I just had these symptoms with a dempsey that ate way too many snails. I raised the temp, but yours should be just fine. I stopped feeding, but he probably wouldnt eat anyway. If it is dietary, clean water, low stress and water changes and you should see improvement in a few days. If he does get better, try feeding him less with better quality foods. Ive read before that too much protein can be hard to digest and cause this.

Either way, I would still look at other possibilities. This is a best case scenario and doesnt really require a treatment. The worst cases are much more serious and the "wait and see" approach is not going to be good if it is a bacterial disease. I cant see at least the salt treatment being too bad

Btw, are her lips swollen? If they are look up duck lips on fish, since that is a deadly disease that can kill a fish in a matter of days to a few weeks...

Since thats how i lost my old polleni, and he also looked a little bloated the day before he died...

Her lips look fine but her eyes bugging out are what made me really start to worry in the first place.

Other than the bloated stomach and bulging eyes she's ok, scales are good, color is normal.

Might be internal parasites/worms from the feeders.

Hopefully not, they were quarantined and she is not the only fish that ate them.

Thanks for that...

I almost posted it there but that area of the forum doesn't seem to get the responses/traffic that general aquaria discussion does so I threw it in here.

Thanks to all that have posted so far.

Shes guarding a new area with my older male "Moby" so hopefully she can drop her batch of eggs.

Fingers crossed, hopefulIy I can get this cleared up.

Still open to comments and suggestions.

When I kept my O's, I used to vist Oscarfishlover.com and Oscarfish.com for some advice. I just did a search on OFL for bloat and found this post. http://www.oscarfishlover.com/helpful-articles/swollen-abdomen Hopefully, this is not what you are experiencing. I recommend you search both of these sites for the symptons you are experiencing. You might find it's something else.

Thanks you for the link; that just happens to be one of the articles I read before posting this thread. Hopefully this is not the case with my O.

Also,

While doing some reading on epsom salt I came across this: http://www.oscarfish.com/article-home/healthdisease/119-fish-bloat.html

Other than setting up a 75 just for her long term, I'm not sure how I would go about doing this. I would hate to pull her out every day for the dips they suggest, as I figure that will stress her out. :banghead: still trying to figure out the best way to treat this. She's too large for my quarantine tank (20gal) and my breeder is currently full.

I could probably use a plastic container but would feel bad leaving her in there long term.

If the plastic tote holds water, it isnt much different than a fish tank. Tinted or a solid color plastic will reduce or eliminate the light and might actually help keep stress down. I hate to do it too, but in the long run it is easier to treat and perform many water changes making it better for the fish too. Think about it this way: no one likes being in a hospital bed for a few weeks, but it isnt a big deal once you get healthy and can go back to your normal life. A few weeks wont be a big traumatic event in the scope of their years of life. Their health is more important than a short term of unhappiness

Well just finished up about an hour ago...

I ended up building a stand for my spare 20 and got it setup and running with my Acara pair and their tank mates.

Swamp thing is now in the 40 breeder by herself.

Epsom treatments it is. I will update with results. Wish her luck!

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Thats great to hear, at least that in theory should mean whatever she has, can be fixed with the right meds / steps taken...

Bump with an update...

I've got her on epsom, 1tsp per 5 gallons for 2 days straight. Did a 50% water change tonight and only added in 1tsp to 10gallons. I will continue to keep it there with water changes every 3 days.

I am also treating her food and trying to get her to eat but to no avail. I haven't seen her poop or eat yet. She has been floating in the bubbles quite a bit but ever since the water change today she's been sitting on the floor.

No signs of improvement.

Advice and experience is still very mich appreciated.uploadfromtaptalk1354772421522.jpg
