So I'm hoping to ask for a filter for my tank for Christmas, seeing how I need one soon anyways and they are SO expensive, it would take me such a long time to save up for one! I'm currently running an AC110 which works while the fish are babies, but they're growing pretty fast now.
The tank is 100 gallons with 6 Geophagus(5 Altifrons and 1 Satanoperca Luecosticta) 2 Delhezi Bichirs, 1 Red Tail Black Shark, and a Chocolate Pleco. I also have a common pleco in there but I plan on selling him eventually.
I want this tank to be way overfiltered! That's how I like my tanks.

I just don't know much about filters, and what works best for larger tanks. Canister filters? I'm thinking that's what I'd like to do, mostly because my tanks stand won't work with a sump, and I don't want another HOB. If possible, I'd like to be able to take the AC110 off my tank, I don't like it and want to use it on a grow-out tank eventually.

Also, I don't know if this matters or not, but I plan on going planted with this tank in the near future.

So...What filters would be best for my setup?
Thanks guys.. :)

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want both? This way you can completely clean a filter and still have the other filter+BB in tank and never worry about a cycle. Not to mention the extra mechanical filtration an ac110 adds, canisters aren't the best for mechanical, especially if your a broke college student, who just rinses the floss pads instead of buying new ones.

Fx5 with all trays filled with media. The way you do water changes, the fx5 will boss your tank.

Eheim 2017.

If you want to go planted, a canister would be the way to go. There is probably a knock of version of a Eheim that would work too. Look for Sun Sun canister filters.

I have a Cascade 1500 and a sponge on a 125 full of large Cichlids. The canister is strictly mechanical and the sponge handles the bio. For $150 I'm very happy with that setup.
