Please help my O "Swamp Thing"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you've seen no poop or improvement, I wouldn't reduce epsom salt dose.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but epsom salts are hard to "over"do, UNlike regular salt.

This degree of swelling in the entire fish seems serious, & more urgent with passing time.
I would maximize epsom salts and consult the most experienced with disease PPL ASAP... before she is too weak to handle drugs that may cure systemic conditions.
At some point, we have to gamble with antibiotics & antiparasitics in fish.
I'm not experienced with fish disease, but uncontrolled infections will eventually shut down organs in anything. If it were my fish, I'd try broad spectrum antibiotics.

All my best to you. wish I were more useful.

If you are going to try food, you might want to look into foods that are medicated for internal parasites. If it is parasites, there are not many good ways to tell. Since you are using only 1 tsp of salt, you could easily use more. I am not familiar with epsom, but when I use regular salt, I use a minimum of 1 tbsp per 5 gallon and for most of my fish I usually use more. For an O, I would use alot stronger dose.

A stressful test you could do... if you catch the O again in a net, gently feel his belly. Some ailments will create a hard, solid obstruction similar to a cancer tumor. It wont really tell you what it is, but it will give you more info about what is going on and you can rule out some possiblities just to be sure.

This is a known, egg laying female. Prior to sickness, was displaying breeding behavior, but laid no eggs.

Being egg bound can progress to (a more complicated) condition of internal infection.
I'd go with treatment for that possibility.

The stress risk of also treating for IP's in a declining fish, I wish experts would address.
Again, IMO, this thread belongs in Diseases section. I am concerned for the fish & owner... he is very attached to her.

Bad news...

I'm beginning treatment with Maracyn-Two as well as continuing 1tsp of Epsom salt per 5 gallons. Also plannkng om crankong the heat to 87 or so over the next few days.

From what I've gathered from reading online about dropsy, my chances of her recovering are slim. But I've got to give it a shot; this is the fish that started me into this hobby.

Forgot the pic...

Raised scales now, figure I have a 10% chance :(

I will also be treating my display tank just incase. Doing a 50% wc then cranking it to 86 and doing 1tsp to 10 gallons. I have already been feeding them anti parasite food since I moved Swamp Thing.

I figure better safe than sorry.

maracyn 1 and 2 each treat diff bacterias. gram positive & gram negative.
you may need to use both at same time to cover all bases.
I have seen it recommended before. both at full strength.
As always, I say experts plz correct me if that's wrong.

Sounds right actually, havent gone to the store yet, spending a little time with my son before bottle and bed time. I'll plan to pick up both as well as some stability to keep the filter running after treatment.

Fingers crossed!

Best of luck with your oscar...

Thank you

And thank you Petspoiler :)

Thanks to everyone who has put input in so far.

If the mods think that I may get more hits in the fw disease section, please feel free to move the thread.

I have bumped her temp to 83.5 tonight and I will have her at 86-87 before the end of the weekend.

I ended up finding enough Maracyn but not Maracyn 2, just enough for tonight (after a trip to 3 different stores) so I'll have to run back out and pick up some more tomorrow.

Salt is back up to 1tsp per 5 gallon. Her eyes are a bit hazy now so I went ahead and turned off her lights for the night.

I will update with any new changes.
