Simple way to solve this is by adding some glass shrimp or a few swordtails. They will keep the bottom of the sump really clean.

Pretty sure ecoli73 was refering to the bottom on the aquarium and not the bottom of the sump.

My bad. For us we normally have a over/under flow system to pick up crap from the bottom, but it's in build in our tank, so If it's a D.I.Y on an existing tank that's running, I guess it's better to have something to pick up all the waste at the bottom.

Just one pic would be hard to see it. I stole some pics from a tank maker in my country to show you what it looks like. I also made a sketch that hopefully is understandable.

This is not my tank, just a typical tank build for a sump system.
