Crazy mike, NINE years!? What do you feed him? How big is the tank? How big are your water changes?

I don't mean to interrogate you, but most fish don't make it that long. You're doing something right.

Maybe someone should start a thread polling everyone who has cichlids in their golden years.

Ah that is a tale. The jd is a left over from when the tank was my dads. Let me explain, my dad had been fish keeping since before I was born but wasn't always the most attentive or caring fish keeper. We would go through groups of fish a lot usually because one got to big and killed everyone off. Well this jd survived quiet a few groups. When we got him at like 4 inches the current tank overlord was a big red devil. He survived that and a couple of jags. Well my dad stopped buying fish for a while and it was just that jd and a butti in the tank for years and he stopped maintaining the tank really. Then like 5 years ago I asked if I could start doing stuff like waterchanges and he let me. They where always feed hikari gold and brine shrimp. I guess it really just takes time. Now the big tank gets weekly waterchanges is under my control and care

I love the jacks that are so old they look beautifully disfigured. I hope mine get like that. They remind me of the hulk. Here's my breeding pair.

That's strange. I've found my jacks to be very fast growers. Less than a year they were at a near adult length.
