this sort of proves my point about white tank and tank reflection

in all my tanks i have all sides apart from the front veiwing glass covered

so do I , I had it all black but then after I bought the 24K Arowana I was told to put it in a white tank , so I had the virtually impossible task changing it to white but my stingrays don't seam to like it at all.
I'm starting to wish I had just bought a red arowana maybe then I would have a fish without D.E - I might cover the front glass & put Amazon frogbit in there but I don't really want to

Resurrected this thread! Any new ideas?
One thing I noticed is no one states there tank size? I think this could be culprit.
Feeding fish frozen prawns with out thawing can't be good. They do not thaw that fast and its quite a temp difference when inside them.
Feeding only frozen is not the best nutrition for any fish, period. Quality pellets must be a staple then frozen for treats. They simply do not get all the nutrition they need from high protein diets for ONLY!

I'm curious if extra large tank low lighting and good pellet diet, with this environment will they get DE?

Tank size could be the reason silvers are more prone to drop eye than other aro as they grow much larger than other aro
But black grow fairly big not as big as silver but not that much smaller

After a week or so of having the fish my mate made it jump after that it stayed in one corner of the tank for a few weeks until I put a air stone there & that is when I noticed it.
Could it have jumped and hit the top hence causing head trauma?
I don't understand the "reflection and looking down for food" issue that caused drop eye.. It has already been debunked in the sticky thread that there is no reflection to begin with, unless your tank bottom is a mirror.. And arowanas in the wild hunt for food in the water all the time, what, do you think they just eat insects??
And for those who said "put in the pond and there will be no DE", well of course the aro won't have DE cause there's nothing for them to hit their heads on top(tree branches don't count)

I have a 30" black without drop eye. It seems like only silvers get this which leads me to believe it's a genetic thing? Of course, like everyone else here, I have no data to support this and it’s just my opinion. I wonder if large wild caught silvers have this? Or maybe this is just a result of living in a tank? Kinda like “Gill Curl” when the tank is too narrow for the fish to turn. I have seen Blacks with gill curl but never drop eye….

Interesting discussion.

I've own a lot of arowanas in the past and would sell them off as soon as the eye began to drop. Same thing happen over and over again. I hated it so much, I stopped buying them. Recently, I've started my own experiment on arowana's drop eye. I bought three 5 inch Arowanas in March 2014. Each had their own 75 gallon tank. 1st tank I fed him massivor pellets and hikari food sticks, 2nd tank was eating market shrimp and tilapia, and the 3rd tank ate roaches, crickets and dormant bugs. They were all given close to the same amount of food twice a day. But In June of 2014, tank #2 right eye began to drop. One month after that, tank #1 eye was beginning to drop as well. To my surprise, tank #3 eyes was absolutely perfect. I sold the two arows with the dropped eyes and kept the perfect one for myself. He's now about 12-13 inches, still with perfect eyes, in a 300 gallon tank with strong currents to help him build strength and to work off any food he ate. His diet has now changed from insects to bullfrogs and green lizards. In my own humble opinion, feeding Arowana food that is high in protein and low in fat is the key to the eyes from dropping and not over feed helps as well. Feeding them that is closer to their natural diet like insects, amphibians, and small reptile. Make sense right? I think Arowana are designed and prefers to hunt insects over fish. Why else would they swim so close to the surface of the water? Just my theory from my own experience. So far... It's working for me. Hopes this helps somebody.
