Broken Arrow, OK
About a week ago I purchased an ornate bichir. when he got in the tank there was a recently settled in Royal knife fish. Well he followed the knife and bit him twice. I separated them but Anybody else have this happen before? Usually compatible species and I understand every fish is different, but I'm still not sure whether to try it again, it confused me

i have 3 ornates with a black ghost knife...among other bichirs and other fish. the knife mostly hides and only sneaks out to eat, but no one really messes with him.

maybe your knife looks like food!

Ornates tend to have the reputation of being the most aggressive out of the Poly group. How is the tank set up? Providing more hiding spots can help.

I have not fed my spare ornate for a few days and she bit my motoro' disk. have to separate her to avoid stress on my rays. My other two are good and don't bother my rays nor synos (can perfectly fit on their mouth). They are also much bigger than my spare girl.

Haha I sure hope not! The knife is actually about an inch bigger than the bichir. The knife whipped around and stood his ground but I separated them quick enough not to see what else would've happened. it wasnt an aggressive bite/behavior from the bichir. more so an exploratory nibble. Only lasted a few seconds. I'm somewhat tempted to let them try again, but I just don't know.

It's a temporary smaller Tang while my bigger tank is cycling, it's a 36 gallon planted tank, with a LOT of hiding places all over the place and when the bite happened my knife started trippin bad and got Osmoregulatory stress which is why I separated them almost immediately. Literally happened as soon as I put the bichir in the tank, the knife fish is fine now but hides constantly. They're both fed nicely now and back to perfect condition. I'll post pictures of the tank once I get home to give you All an idea of the set up

Your story about osmoregulatory stress makes no sense. Here is what it is, and how the fish gets it:

Osmotic stress
It occurs when fish are kept in water with inadequate mineral levels (too high or too low). Osmotic stress affects more seriously fish whose natural habitat is rich in minerals and who are kept in the aquarium with a low mineral level, as osmotic gradients (difference) between the internal fluids of the fish and its surrounding environment (water) increase. Such fish have a less effective osmoregulation than those who are physiologically adapted to water with a low mineral level. That is why they are not able to cope with overloading of osmoregulation.
However, osmotic stress can occur if fish from ponds with a low mineral level are kept in hard water.

So, unless you changed the water with distilled at the same time it was bitten, this didn't happen.

From the information I gained about the osmoregulatory stress syndrome Can be induced from extreme stress, as well as inadequate acclimation. The behavior it was showing after being bitten Was identical to the symptoms from the osmoregulatory stress syndrome and i treated it as such, and now it is completely back to normal.

My delhezi constantly harrasses my armatus by swimming up to him and trying to rub on him like he's another poly. He'll even take food out of the armatus's mouth (not smart on the polys behalf). I think they are just curious of what's around them, mines not aggressive at all, just annoying lol
