From the 220 to the Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about oxydoras niger, i have one an i swear its like a live gravel vac.. or ever heard about a marbled pimeloid, also a nice largish cat

X2. Pim would be cool. The problem with rtc is the height and girth of the fish. The big ones will be a foot tall and a foot wide without including fins.

Make it 5' wide if you can that would be better.... I've never seen an aquarium RTC get 4' either just because a fish can reach that size
Doesn't mean it will. And even if it does that would take years...

So as some of you may know I will be moving at the end of this school year and I will have to restock my tank. And I think I've finally got a perfect plan. I've convinced my Mom and Dad to allow me to build an indoor pond, I'm thinking the dimensions will be 8' x 4' x 2' high but ill only fill it with water up to 20" so I'll have a little splash protection. I'm using the 220 as a grow out for a few of the fish and this is what I plan on keeping. I put stars next to the fish I for sure will have to move to the pond. Otherwise I would like the rest to stay in the 220 for life but depending on the growth rate of the PB they might have to go in the pond and same with the Ray. For filtration on my 220 I have 2 Cascade 1500's and an Aquaclear 110. For the pond ill be rocking a DIY sump. Substrates will both be sand.(Black in 220, white play sand in the pond) What do you guys think? Any fish I should add or take out? Or do you guys think pea gravel would be better in the pond? Would my Pond or 220 be over stocked? Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

3 Peacock Bass
2 Silver Arowanas *
1 Red Tail Catfish *
1 RTC TSN Hybrid *
1 Ornate Bichir
2 Florida Gar
1 Clown Knife Fish
1 Sting Ray

I can offer my opinion, so with that in mind...

(1) 2 Silver Arowanas * - 2 is quite rarely a good number. These two aros have a better chance at less violence if they grew up together. Otherwise, I'd suggest either 1 or at least 4-5.

(2) 1 Red Tail Catfish * - 3.5' is very reasonable to expect, even 4'. I am a proponent of the 4xL by 2xL by 2xL minimum rule.

(3) 1 RTC TSN Hybrid * - same as RTC comments.

(4) 2 Florida Gar - mine are ~3'; they reach 4' in the wild.

Your 8'x4'x20" is ~450 gal. If we are talking long term housing, (a) big cats will eat up aros and gars and maybe even pbass too and (b) it is utterly too small; inhumane IMO.

TSN should be expected to max out at ~6" less than RTC and the hybrid. It does not change a thing IMO.

Chub_by, I don't dare to scold anyone :) I am much sorry if I come across as such :( All I try to do is simply offer my opinion. Anyone is free to do what they please within the framework of the law.

OP: I know your pains. I wanted to build a big pond in my basement but my better half was not thrilled about it. We fought a lot over it. Eventually I was able to put together a 4000 gal 40'x6'x3' pond but through much pain and resistance etc.

Why do people ask for advise and then always argue when they get it?

Often, I believe and hope they try to understand better what is being advised and why - that way they learn 100 times more. And when all involved behave as gentlemen, everyone wins and learns something.

Sure, it is hard to change anyone's thinking - it is usually a process that takes time and can be painful. Dealing with an opposing opinion and even with critisism is one of man's biggest challenges, perfectly mastered only by the ones we call saints.

You should know that I was just joking about the scolding :D I have gotten to know you as a very kind person ( well through the internet at least)
OP, look into the sorubim genus! Nice catfish that will fit into your pond lots better than the really huge species like RTC/TSN ;)
