Best gun for home defense?

My family has been talking about getting a female member of the family a gun for Christmas. Any advice? Thinking a shotgun or possibly a handgun.

For shotguns we are just looking at basic stuff, Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 590. Handguns something like a 1911 or glock.

I personally would go with a shotgun Mossberg 870 sounds like it would be an awesome gift

mossberg makes a 500 and the 870 is a Remington. Hands down a shot gun would be the best weapon for home defense.
 
Does not matter, any will do. Just point and shoot, just remember to train, train, and then train some more. A weapon is useless unless you train for when SHTF.
 
I have a Mossberg. Short barrell.

And it is stupid enough as it is already.

Don't give a girl a hangun. Too falible, imho.

I also have 32 Magun Dan Wesson. Also, stupid enough, because i won't use unless my children or wife are at aerious risk. And even so i sense that the bad guys will end shooting me first....

The Mossberg has a more intuitive safety. But it's really all personal preference. Go check out each one with her and see which one she feels more comfortable with. Whichever one is more comfortable for her is the right gun.

I have a benelli m4. Best gun hands down ive ever owned. Theres been alot. But a m2
in 16 gauge would be prefrable for a woman. thats what my mother uses for turkey hunting.
Shotguns make more sense than most everything in home defense for a novice.
